I Supported My Bankrupt Boyfriend for Three Years, Then Met His Wife Chapter 06
Beneath the dark night sky, the speeding luxury sedan splashed rainwater across the pavement. Kael rested his head against the car window, his cheek lit up by streaks of neon color from the city
lights.
Suddenly, he called for the driver to stop.
He pushed open the car door, glanced down at the damp wet tiles under his feet, then pulled back
inside again.
He spoke calmly to the driver.
“Head to that bakery shop up ahead. Grab two savory meat pastries.”
Minutes later, the warm, fresh scent of baked pastries filled the car, overpowering the faint cold luxury perfume lingering in the air.
Kael wrinkled his nose in faint distaste, but the corners of his mouth tugged upward ever so
slightly.
He muttered to himself. “I bought her favorite cakes. She’s bound to cool off now.”
He had no idea I’d never actually cared much for those sesame cakes.
I’d only eaten them back then because they were filling, cheap, and kept hunger at bay.
During those cramped cohabitation years, the days I starved myself to save money, I’d grown so sick of them the mere sight made my stomach churn.
When Kael stepped into the old hospital room, his brows slammed together.
“Where is she?”
Unease twisted in his gut. He tossed the sesame cakes carelessly onto the nightstand, then sprinted down the hospital hallway in his expensive red-soled dress shoes, throwing all dignity aside.
“Where’s the patient in Room 306?” He practically lunged at the front desk, gasping for breath as he pressed the nurse for answers.
“Room 306’s patient…” The nurse pulled up her records.
“Miss Mercer?”
Kael clenched his fists tight, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly growl.
“Do you expect me to stand by and watch Celeste disappear for good?!”
The second the words left his mouth, it felt as though his heart was splitting open.
He crumpled to the floor, drawing his arms tight around himself.
A long stretch of heavy silence passed-then soft, muffled sobs echoed through the room.
