I Supported My Bankrupt Boyfriend for Three Years, Then Met His Wife Chapter 05

On the other side, Kael was cooing over Seraphina.

Jewelry and gemstones were delivered to her in an endless stream, but she still turned her nose up

at him in a spoiled huff.

“Don’t touch me. You disgust me.”

“Go run to your little mistress instead. Why bother hanging around me? She lost your baby for you

-isn’t that tragic?”

“I heard she even saved you, slaving away every single day to support you. What a debt of gratitude

she’s owed you. All I ever do is cry and act clingy. I could never be as capable as her.”

Kael smiled and tapped the tip of Seraphina’s nose.

“Why would I make you suffer like that? I clawed my assets back single-handedly just so I could

take care of you.”

“Seraphina, I promised you once-if you stayed with me, I’d never let you struggle a day in your

life.”

“As for that woman…”

Kael paused, his voice growing vague and muddled.

“She saw me at my lowest. I only wanted to keep her within sight to stop her from running her

mouth to outsiders.”

He’d barely calmed Seraphina down when his assistant knocked on the door.

Kael massaged his throbbing temple and stepped outside, weariness heavy in his tone.

“Did she accept the things I sent?”

The assistant nodded.

A flicker of knowing, even mocking, light crossed Kael’s eyes.

“I thought she had more pride than that. Turns out I just didn’t throw enough money at her.’

“Sir, Miss Mercer asked me to pass along a message.”

The assistant kept his head bowed, his voice soft yet clear enough for Kael to hear every word

“Kael, I regret ever taking you in. I never want to see you again.”

A vein bulged sharply on Kael’s forehead.

He lurched forward and grabbed the assistant by the collar.

“She really said that?” Shock, rage, and hurt he hadn’t even noticed laced his tone.

“Yes, sir. Those were her exact words.”

“Ungrateful woman.” He ground the words out through gritted teeth, his voice raw and strained.

“Where is she? Still at the hospital?”

“Take me there. I’d like to see her spit such harsh words to my face.”

Kael strode for the front door, but Seraphina came sprinting out of the bedroom and blocked his path the second he pulled it open.

“Kael, it’s the middle of the night. Where are you going?” Her lower lip trembled, tears already

welling in her eyes.

“If you walk out that door, I’ll never forgive you.”

Impatience gnawed at Kael, but he forced his temper down.

He swept Seraphina up bridal-style and set her back on the bed.

“Don’t walk barefoot-the floors are cold.”

“Be sweet. There’s an issue with the company I need to sort out. I’ll be right back.”

But Seraphina clung tight to his arm, refusing to let go.

“I don’t care. You have to stay here and sleep with me, or I’ll never rest a wink.”

“You have no idea. Every time I close my eyes, I picture the news of you going bankrupt and vanishing. All those days, I worried myself sick over you. I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep.”

For a split second, Kael’s heart softened.

He almost told his assistant to leave, but the thought of Celeste crashed back into his mind.

For three years, he’d watched her nonstop.

Watched her tend to his every need, running herself ragged around the tiny apartment.

Watched her work backbreaking odd jobs through wind and rain, all for a silly offhand comment he’d once nodded along to.

“I’ll work as hard as I can. Someday I’ll get you a mansion.”

Truth be told, he’d owned mansions long before his bankruptcy-the same one he’d gifted

Seraphina-and rebuilt his fortune afterward.

He’d had countless chances to tell Celeste she never needed to push herself so hard, that he already

had everything she dreamed of.

Yet he’d hidden it all instinctively, greedy for the unreserved, wholehearted devotion she gave him

A sudden heavy ache bloomed in Kael’s chest.

He ignored Seraphina’s rambling, his gaze fixed blankly on her smooth, flawless skin.

Celeste’s skin had been rougher by comparison.

Sometimes when she held him, her hands felt scratchy against his skin.

She’d noticed his quiet distaste, secretly scrubbing her body raw with exfoliating creams every

night to smooth it out.

It never matched Seraphina’s pampered softness, no matter how hard she tried.

A twinge of pity pricked Kael’s heart.

From the day he’d met her, Celeste had never known a single easy day.

Yet she never complained, always greeting him with a warm, bright smile.

“Get some rest. I’m leaving.”

Kael pried Seraphina’s arms off him roughly, ignoring her loud sobs as he walked out without a single backward glance.

His mind was filled with nothing but Celeste.

If she took back those cruel words she’d said, he swore he’d treat her better.
