I Stumble Upon My Girlfriend’s Wedding Chapter 06
Third–Person POV
Madeleine stood up abruptly, her chair flipping backward with a loud crash.
Every guest around the room turned to look at her.
Tamara’s expression darkened. “What are you doing, Madeleine?”
Richard looked over, and the warmth in his eyes instantly hardened into a warning. But she no longer cared about any of it. She just got up and walked straight out.
“Madeleine Petty!” Richard yelled after her. “You know exactly what will happen if you dare walk out of this birthday dinner today!”
But none of that mattered to her anymore.
By the time Madeleine reached the riverbank, police tape had already sealed off the area. She stared at the scene in front of her in utter disbelief.
“You still haven’t found him? Are you useless idiots even doing your jobs?”
One of the rescue workers tried to calm her down. “Ma’am, please calm down and don’t interfere with our rescue operations.”
Madeleine stared at the turbulent, muddy water, her mind completely blank.
More and more onlookers gathered along the bank. Some held up their phones to record, while others whispered among themselves.
“I heard the guy who jumped was that homewrecker who caused that massive uproar online.”
“Yeah. Turns out his mother was someone’s mistress too. Like mother, like son. Honestly, good riddance.”
“I heard his mother jumped off a building too. That’s so satisfying to hear. All homewreckers deserve a miserable death!”
Madeleine’s eyes widened in disbelief. How could that be? she had clearly sent people to keep an eye on Jeremy’s mother.
She immediately called Kathy.
“Didn’t you ask for them to be dismissed, Ms. Petty?” Kathy answered hesitantly.
Madeleine felt her head begin to buzz. “When did I ever dismiss them?”
“Mr. Morris was the one who gave the order…”
The words hit Madeleine like a sledgehammer, leaving her utterly stunned. Now she understood why Jeremy had lost all hope and resorted to suicide, and why he had chosen such an extreme way out.
The rescue team continued to search the river for six hours straight. The whole time, she remained standing on the bank, keeping a close watch.
The team finally ended their search at 3:00 am.
he captain removed his helmet and walked over, exhaustion etched across his face.
I’m sorry, Ms. Petty,” he said, shaking his head. “The current in this section of the river is too strong, and there’s n underwater whirlpool farther downstream. We… did everything we could.”
ladeleine just continued staring at the pitch–black surface of the river.
Ms. Petty,” Kathy started carefully. “You should go home and get some rest. I’ll arrange for another search
morrow.”
fter a long silence, Madeleine finally spoke. “Keep searching. want to find him, dead or alive.‘
athy hesitated. “But-”
Keep searching!” Madeleine snapped, whipping around.
er eyes were completely bloodshot, and the almost–mad look on her face made Kathy instinctively step back in ar. She had worked for Madeleine for five years, and never once had she seen her like this.
fter a long while, Kathy heard Madeleine mutter, “He doesn’t know how to swim. Jer can’t swim. When he was a id, he fell into a river back in his hometown, and he’s been afraid of the water ever since…”
er voice caught before she could finish.
t some point, rain had begun to fall, making the river surge violently.
athy didn’t know what to say. She simply held the umbrella as she watched the woman who had always seemed > high–and–mighty slowly bend over until she finally sank into a crouch on the ground.
