I Hid the Don’s Son for Three Years Chapter 05
The Donna’s eyes were red. She took my hand, pleading for the first time.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry. Please – stay with Luca. Help him finish his treatment. I’m begging you.”
I was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.”
I took Luca’s hand and followed the doctor.
His palm was roughly bandaged. Blood already seeped through the white gauze, but he didn’t
seem to care.
Johnny sat quietly in his arms, leaning on his shoulder and studying the stranger’s profile.
When they sat down in the exam room, Johnny turned around. He cupped Luca’s face in his small hands, studying it, comparing it to their reflection
in the wall mirror.
He tilted his head, eyes bright. “Mister, why do you
look so much like me?”
Luca paused, then smiled. “You look like me.
Because I’m your dad.”
The doctor walked in with a tray. “Don Luca, I need
to run a brain scan.”
Luca grunted and let the nurse change his bandages. But his eyes never left me.
I stood by the bed, frozen in place by his gaze.
Johnny patted Luca’s arm. “You have to listen to
the doctor. Mom says when you’re hurt, you need
to get better.”
Luca looked down at him. “Okay. I’ll listen to you.”
The exam took nearly two hours. Luca lay in the
MRI, holding my wrist, squeezing it again and
again.
Until the doctor brought in the report. “The clot is
absorbing faster than expected. His memory
should return soon.”
He added, “But keep him calm. No more intense
shocks.”
The Donna stood in the doorway, listening. She
leaned on the doorframe, her back finally relaxing.
The day Luca came home from the hospital, the
first thing he said to his parents was, “I’m
marrying Gia. We’re having a wedding.”
He held my hand tight. No negotiation.
Old Don froze. The Donna’s smile faltered. “Your
wedding date with Rebecca is already set.
Invitations have gone out. How do you think she’ll
feel? How will her family feel?”
Luca glanced at me, then back at them, his voice
colder. “When you took advantage of my amnesia
to drive her away, did you ever think about how
she felt?”
