Back at the house, workers came and went.
They’d barely cleared half of Blair’s things.
Reid stood in the corner with Mira’s phone, calling Nova.
Nine times. All hung up. On the tenth, he was blocked.
He lowered the phone. He looked at Arlo, “You try.”
Arlo shook his head, “She blocked me too.”
Mira’s eyes burned with pain, “She’s made up her mind.”
“She’s cutting us off completely. I’m her sister.”
“How can I face our parents at their grave after this?”
She crouched down, sobbing.
Arlo looked guilty too, “It’s my fault. I kept joking. I pushed her
away.”
Reid leaned against the wall, silent. His eyes grew red.
He couldn’t deny it-over the past nine months, he’d felt something for Blair.
She was soft, gentle. Nothing like Nova’s sharp edges.
She’d warmed his heart, piece by piece.
He’d even wondered, what if it had been Blair all along?
Would he have been happier?
But now Nova was really gone.
And his chest felt like something had been torn out. Breathing hurt.
Finally, he understood. His heart had always belonged to Nova.
When she left, it went with her.
A worker dropped a ring. It rolled to Reid’s feet.
He picked it up. His wedding ring.
Blair had wanted matching rings for the ceremony.
So he gave her the female half.
He’d told Nova the design was too flashy for her-it was just a spare.
He gave her a freebie instead.
She’d been so happy planning the wedding, she never noticed the diamond was half the size.
His chest ached.
He was the one who’d wronged her most.
His selfishness had pushed her away, again and again.
Arlo patted his shoulder, “The workers are asking-do you want to keep this ring? And the other jewelry?”
Reid laughed bitterly, “No. Throw it all out. Everything Blair touched disgusts me.’
“I’ll buy Nova new ones when she comes back.”
Arlo hesitated. Then he leaned in, “Reid, we were wrong.”
“But you know Nova. She loves deeply and stubbornly.”
“And when she hates, nothing can change her mind. So Reid, you—”
He stopped. Reid understood.
No matter how much he punished Blair or threw things away, Nova would still hate him.
She wouldn’t come back.
But his mind filled with her smile.
He remembered their first date. The five of them walking by the sea.
Nova turned to him and asked, “Reid, will you ever betray me?”
They all laughed.
Reid pointed at the water, “Only if the sea dries up.”
Nova laughed too, pointing at the gulls, “If you ever hurt me, I’ll become a seagull and fly somewhere you’ll never find me.”
Reid ruffled her hair, “I’ll find you no matter where you go.”
His heart stirred. Arlo opened his mouth again.
Reid snapped, “Shut up!”
His fists tightened. “I know Nova better than you. She loved me.”
“That’s why she gave in so many times. If I apologize properly, she’ll forgive me,”
“Like before. So wherever she goes-I’ll find her.”
He pushed past Arlo and walked out.
Arlo stumbled, tried to grab him.
Mira held him back. Her voice cracked with tears,
“Don’t stop him.”
“This is what he owes Nova. What we all owe Nova.”
