I Drugged the Snake Beast Alpha… And the System Screamed I Chose the Wrong Mate Chapter 04
Days turned into a week, and no one found Chloe.
Silas showed up at my cabin with the elder and what looked like the entire settlement behind him.
The elder stroked his graying beard, his voice weighted with authority.
“Sloane, the chosen one is missing because of you. Chances are, she’s already…”
“If we don’t act, the Moon Goddess’s wrath will fall on all of us. We have to appease her.”
Rowan’s expression hardened, and he stepped in front of me.
“What are you getting at?”
Silas’s face was drawn tight, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes.
“Sloane is the reason the chosen one is gone. The settlement voted. Unanimously. She’ll be offered as a sacrifice to the Moon Goddess.”
[This plotline is absolutely UNHINGED.]
[The ML’s answer to everything is “kill her.” Real compelling love interest, this one.]
Rowan’s lip curled.
“That’s insane. Chloe left on her own. How is any of this Sloane’s fault?”
“If Sloane hadn’t drugged me, Chloe and I never would’ve fought. She never would’ve left.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. I stepped out from behind Rowan.
“You knew she was upset. You knew she ran off. So why didn’t you go after her? Too slow to track her?”
“If you love her so much, why’d you let her run off into the woods alone?”
[Her mouth is LETHAL. I am living for this energy.]
[Men will say anything. The ML is Exhibit A.]
Silas’s chest heaved.
“You always have to have the last word, don’t you?”
“It doesn’t matter what you say. Today, you’ll answer to the Moon Goddess.”
“No one touches her.”
Rowan’s voice broke into a snarl, and he shifted.
A massive silver wolf filled the space where he’d been, planted between me and the crowd. Sunlight caught his fur like polished steel, and the sheer size of him made every person in that doorway step back.
Silas answered in kind. A black serpent uncoiled in his place, scales catching the light like wet obsidian.
The crowd went dead silent.
[The ML can’t beat Rowan yet, right? Rowan, END him.]
[STOP FIGHTING, both of you. The FL’s about to come back with her shiny new merman mate anyway.]
[To the girl above me, SPOILERS? Are you serious right now?]
I paused. So Chloe was going to be fine.
I reached for Rowan, but in wolf form, he towered over me. My hand found the fur on his leg instead.
“Easy. Chloe’s going to be fine.”
I turned to Silas.
“Chloe’s alive, and she’s coming back today. I’d stake my life on it.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Then let’s make a deal. If Chloe walks back into this settlement today, you owe me an apology. If she doesn’t, you can do whatever you want with me.”
Silas studied me for a long moment.
“Fine.”
He’d barely gotten the word out when a settler came sprinting up, shouting loud enough for everyone to hear, “The chosen one’s back! She’s back!”
