Hidden Husband: Replaced by Her First Love Chapter 08
During the entire process, Faith said nothing, looking as though she had been wronged.
But Henry was looking at me smugly. This was exactly what he wanted.
As soon as we were outside the courthouse, Faith wanted to say something, but I walked away without looking back.
From that day on, I never wanted to see her again.
When I returned to work, my colleagues congratulated me on finally getting out of a toxic marriage. My situation was no longer a secret.
Amid the applause, someone gave me a thumbs-up. “Buddy, you did the right thing.”
The kindness of the people who barely knew me brought me great comfort.
Later, I threw myself into work. Very quickly, I completed a task that should have taken a year, finishing it three months ahead of schedule.
Mr. Smith, the chairman, was pleased. Not only did he make me general manager, but he also assigned me several high-value projects, which I completed successfully as well. Slowly, I began to establish myself in the company.
Today, Mr. Smith took me to a bidding conference. Since something came up, he would be arriving later, so I headed to the banquet alone first.
In fact, the banquet was hosted by my company. Everyone was dressed to the nines and looking elegant, with flawless makeup.
I’d spent the last several years living a pretty ordinary life, so I never had the chance to experience an event on
this scale.
While I was looking around, laughter rang out from the lobby.
“Faith?”
Faith was wearing a cheap dress, holding onto Henry’s arm as she looked at me in shock. “Henry, do you see that? How did an outsider get in here?”
I didn’t expect to run into Faith again. Next to Henry, she no longer looked like a socialite but more like someone who tried to pass for one.
Henry tilted his head and smiled faintly as he smoothed down a strand of her hair. “Perhaps he snuck in here for a free meal. Forget it. We’ll just think of it as charity.”
Someone overheard Henry and believed what he said was true. They shot me a dirty look.
“This is the most prestigious economic conference in the country. Do you even deserve to be here? Someone call security and throw him out. Unbelievable.”
Emboldened, Henry became even more smug. “When I was abroad, I saw people like you at cocktail parties. They ended up getting thrown out. No exceptions. It might be a little hard for you to take, so why don’t you leave now?”
Faith finally showed her true colors, her eyes filled with disdain. “Just leave. I don’t even want people knowing you’re my ex-husband.”
Just then, the head of security hurried over with two guards in tow. Not recognizing me, he asked with a frown,
Sir, may I see your invitation?”
“I don’t have it.” My expression remained blank.
The corners of Henry’s lips curled into a smirk. “So he’s just the cleaner here.”
Others started jeering at me too. “Leave. Don’t ruin the conference.”
“Are they actually just letting anyone in? How annoying.”
Faith tightened her grip on Henry’s arm, her face filled with smug satisfaction. “I thought you’d amount to something. I didn’t expect you to end up like this. How embarrassing.”
As I looked at her, a trace of mockery crossed my face.
But the guards mistook my reaction for guilt and stepped forward to drag me out.
“I don’t have an invitation, but why would the organizer need an invitation to his own event? Are you saying I should invite myself?”
The crowd fell silent for a moment before bursting into laughter.
“You? You’re the organizer?” The head of security refused to believe me.
