He Sent an Intern to Meet His Parents, I Sent Him a Wedding Invitation Chapter 08

Suddenly, messages began pouring in, not just from Barbara and Richard, but from Brandon’s old

friends too.

They all said the same thing: please come back and see Brandon.

Even Barbara, who had never liked me, sent a message that was almost groveling.

[I misjudged you. I thought you were a pushy employee who didn’t know her place. Now I see how much you did for the company and for Brandon.]

[I took the ring back. From now on, it will only ever go on your finger.]

[Brandon is stubborn and proud. He loves you, but he hates feeling tied down. And now that you’re gone, he’s lost his anchor.]

[He just can’t admit that he needs you. He thought that because you stayed for ten years, you’d stay forever. I know it’s not fair to you. But please, for the sake of those ten years, come see him.]

I said no.

Photos of Brandon drinking himself sick kept coming to my phone, and former coworkers reached

out too.

[Megan, please come see Mr. Hastings. He hasn’t come to work a single day since you left. The company is falling apart. We’re all going to get laid off.]

The situation escalated to the point where it reached me at a party.

A friend of Brandon’s sent me a photo. Brandon was nearby, completely wasted, and wouldn’t let anyone touch him. He would only go home if his girlfriend came to get him.

[Megan, please. Just help us out. Right now he only trusts you. If you don’t come, the boss is never going home tonight.]

I went to see for myself.

As soon as I walked in, I saw Jenny there too. She was holding a glass of honey water and speaking softly next to him.

“Mr. Hastings, your girlfriend is here.”

Brandon squinted, looked at me for a minute, and laughed. “She’s not my girlfriend.”

Everyone froze as Brandon took Jenny’s hand and pressed it against his hot cheek. “This is my

girlfriend.”

“Mr. Hastings…” Jenny’s cheeks flushed instantly.

“Dude, you’re confused! Megan is right there!”

But no matter how his friends tried to reason with him, Brandon kept a death grip on Jenny’s hand.

I turned around. “Then I’m leaving.”

I opened the door and started to walk out.

“Megan.” Brandon’s voice came from behind me, no slurring, clear and sharp.

“Brandon…” His friends stared at him in shock.

I frowned too. “You’re not drunk.”

Brandon let go of Jenny’s hand. He sat there looking drained. “Everyone out.”

“Mr. Hastings…” Jenny tried to stay, but Brandon didn’t even look at her. “You too.”

Jenny bit her lip and left with the others. As she passed me, she shot me a dirty look.

Brandon looked up at me. “So you really feel nothing for me anymore.”

I looked around at the bottles scattered across the room. “You were testing me.”

Brandon smiled.

I frowned. “I don’t even know what to say to you anymore.”

“What’s the point of saying anything?” Brandon’s eyes reddened. “You don’t love me anymore.”

When he took Jenny’s hand, he saw no pain in my eyes.

His voice cracked. “How did we end up here?”

I thought for a moment. “Brandon, you know what? I’ve never actually seen the ocean.”

He froze.

“The first time, I stayed to take care of you. The second time, I stayed to rewrite your proposal. The third time, I stayed to meet your client.”

He stood there frozen.

“But the ocean I never saw in ten years, I saw it once with Zachary. It was beautiful.”

He stared at me, speechless for a long time.

“Goodbye, Brandon.” That was all I said, and I left the room.

Behind me, he broke down sobbing.

Not long after, I heard that Jenny had been fired and blacklisted across the industry by Brandon.

Then, a ring arrived at my house.

[It was always meant for you. Now that you’re gone, it’ll never find another owner. Keep it as a memory. Do whatever you want with it.]

Zachary took that ring and threw it away.

Then Brandon started depositing a large sum of money into my account every month. The note read: [I’m sorry for the last ten years. Be happy.]

He never missed a month.

Zachary got so annoyed that he started depositing even more into my account every month.

The two men kept one-upping each other. Every time they ran into each other at a business conference, they would glare at each other like rivals.

At that point, I would pull Zachary away and avoid any drama with Brandon.

Brandon would just watch quietly, his eyes red-rimmed.

Years passed. He never married. Everyone said he was waiting for me.

But Zachary never gave him that chance.

My life moved onto the fast track.

Those ten years slowly faded behind me.
