When I heard that furious roar, I instinctively looked toward the source of the voice. 

It was Caleb Grant, Zachary’s military academy classmate and his fiercest rival in the Army. 

At that moment, he was like a feral beast. 

He tore free of the people trying to hold him back 

and strode toward Zachary. 

Then he grabbed Zachary by the collar and said through gritted teeth, “You said you loved her. You said you’d protect her. Is this what you call love? Is this what you call protecting her?” 

Zachary’s expression changed, and he shoved him 

away hard. 

“Caleb, have you lost your mind? What I do has 

nothing to do with you!” 

“Nothing to do with me?” 

Caleb’s dark, ruthless gaze swept over me, and I 

shivered without thinking. 

“Back then, you told me to stay away from her. You 

told me…” 

“Caleb! Shut the hell up!” 

Zachary’s expression hardened as he snapped 

through clenched teeth. 

“What are you two doing? What is going on here?” 

Zachary’s father was the first to react, and he demanded an answer in a stern voice. 

My mother also looked at me in confusion. “Lily, is what he just said true?” 

“You were Zachary’s girlfriend?” 

“No!” Before I could speak, Sophia tightened her grip on Zachary’s arm, looking frantic. “I’m Zachary’s girlfriend. I’m the one who has always 

been with him!” 

Zachary met her pleading gaze. 

Then he looked at me, standing not far away. 

Hesitation flashed in his eyes. His lips moved 

slightly, but he said nothing. 

From the moment I decided to give up on him, I had stopped expecting him to stand behind me unconditionally the way he used to. 

I smiled and walked toward Caleb. 

In front of everyone, I took his arm. 

“Sophia is right. She is Zachary’s girlfriend. And I…” 

“I’m Caleb’s girlfriend.” 

Then I gave my mother, who stood frozen in place, an apologetic look. 

“Mom, I’m sorry. We had a fight a while ago, so I said he was dead. The truth is, he’s perfectly alive.” 

Zachary stared at my hand on Caleb’s arm, his eyes bloodshot. 

“Lillian, do you have any idea what you’re saying?”
