He Married My Best Friend, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 04
My mother looked at me, clearly seeing how out of it I was, and let out a deep sigh.
“Lily, remember this. Never waste yourself on a man who lies more than he tells the truth. And a man with no sense of responsibility, one who only knows how to run away, is even worse. When you date someone in the future, look closely and don’t let yourself be fooled.”
I came back to myself and murmured, “Okay.”
After that, Zachary and Sophia both got busy.
They had to oversee the wedding venue decor and prepare the wedding favors.
I was also busy planning my mother’s birthday dinner.
What I did not expect was that they would come looking for me.
“Lily, ever since we were little, I always dreamed we’d be each other’s bridesmaids. Now that I’m getting married, I hope you’ll be my bridesmaid. Will you?”
Sophia asked carefully.
Zachary did not give me a chance to refuse.
“Your bridesmaid dress is already finished. The bridal shop will deliver it this afternoon. My mother has seen it, and she said it’s beautiful and suits you.”
I did not care about what they were saying.
My gaze fell on the matching wedding bands on their ring fingers.
Their rings were simple, just plain bands.
But the bands were engraved with their initials.
It was a design I had come up with when I was twenty.
I had told Sophia that I hoped one day, the person I loved and I would walk down the aisle wearing rings I had designed myself.
“Lily, if you don’t say anything, I’ll take that as a yes. Thank you.”
Sophia took my hand excitedly.
Then she smiled and said, “On our wedding day, all our parents will be there, along with so many of our fellow service members and commanding officers. They’ll all want the wedding to go smoothly. You want that too, right, Lily?”
Her smile was no longer natural or pure.
There was a faint threat beneath it.
She knew my mother cared deeply about keeping up appearances.
She also knew I would not let my family become a joke in everyone else’s eyes over this.
I slowly pushed her hand away and smiled.
“Yes. I’ll give you my blessing.”
Zachary’s attention was not on us.
He was looking around my family’s living room.
When he noticed that the photo of the two of us on the coffee table had been replaced by a family photo, his gaze paused slightly.
Before he left, he looked at me and sighed.
“What Sophia said just now was for our sake. Don’t take it to heart. When you and I get married someday, she can be our bridesmaid too. Just think of this wedding as a rehearsal for ours.”
When I heard that, I almost laughed.
What made him think I would still listen to him?
And what made him think I would want a man who already had one marriage behind him?
Time passed quickly.
Soon, it was their wedding day.
Zachary and Sophia kept glancing at me from time to time.
It was as if they were afraid I would cause a scene regardless of the occasion.
But they were disappointed.
The entire time, I wore a perfectly measured smile.
I helped them handle every small mishap that came up at the wedding.
Seeing that, Zachary and Sophia slowly relaxed.
Then, just as the officiant prompted them to walk hand in hand toward the front of the room, an untimely roar came from not far away.
“Zachary, didn’t you tell me Lillian was your girlfriend and warn me to stay away from her?”
“Now you turn around and marry someone else, then make her stand there as your bridesmaid? Are you deliberately humiliating her?”
