He Married His Enemy’s Daughter, So I Left the Mafia Family Chapter 04

The next day, I found a few cardboard boxes and started packing up my father’s belongings.

I’d just wrapped his old medal when Selena walked over with a glass of juice in her hand.

She stopped beside me, her gaze slowly dropping to my stomach.

“Natalie.”

Her voice no longer sounded weak or fragile like it usually did.

“You’re pregnant too, aren’t you?”

I ignored her.

She smiled.

“I knew it. Shame Adrian married me three years ago. Have the baby if you like. It’ll still be a bastard he can never acknowledge.”

My fingers tightened.

Selena lowered her voice and kept attacking both my father and my unborn child.

“Your father spent his whole life risking his neck for the Morettis, and they still never truly let him into the Family’s inner circle. Now his daughter is carrying a Moretti man’s child without even being his wife. I suppose that’s just how it is with the Carters. You spend your lives working for other people, but you never quite belong.”

My head snapped up.

“Shut up.”

The corner of her mouth lifted when she saw my reaction.

Then, in the next second, she deliberately threw herself backward.

The juice in her glass splashed all over my father’s photographs and certificates.

She even stepped directly on the commemorative coin engraved with the Moretti crest.

“Ow!”

Selena grabbed her stomach and dropped to the floor.

“Natalie, why did you push me?”

Adrian heard the noise and rushed out of the study.

The moment he saw Selena on the floor, his expression changed.

“Natalie!”

He crossed the room in a few strides and pulled Selena into his arms.

“What the hell are you trying to do?”

I stood where I was.

He saw everything scattered across the floor, but didn’t even ask what had happened.

“Daniel spent years teaching you the rules, and this is how you behave? Selena’s pregnant, and you still put your hands on her?”

I said quietly, “She stepped on my dad’s things.”

There wasn’t even the slightest hesitation in Adrian’s eyes.

“So what? They make her uncomfortable. And you’d do well to remember your place. She’s a Rossi, and she’s my wife now. You’re just a Carter.”

Several guards in the living room heard every word, and not one of them seemed to think he’d gone too far.

One of them even kicked my father’s juice-soaked photograph aside to clear a path for Selena.

I stared at the leather shoe that had just kicked my father’s photograph aside and decided there was no point explaining anything anymore.

I bent down, picked up the photograph, wiped away the juice, then placed the damaged commemorative coin and everything else into the cardboard box.

“You’re right. I’m just a Carter. I’ll finish packing and go. Then none of you will have to look at me again.”

My calmness caught Adrian off guard.

“Who said anything about you leaving? Natalie, what are you playing at now?”

Before he could finish, the massive floor-to-ceiling window in the living room exploded inward.

Glass flew everywhere.

Several men in black masks stormed in from the terrace.

Some carried handguns.

Others had knives.

I immediately recognized the old Rossi Family crest on one man’s wrist.

They were remnants we’d failed to eliminate five years ago.

I didn’t even have time to think.

I drew the revolver from my waist, vaulted over the sofa, and put myself between them and everyone else.

Adrian’s first instinct was to shield Selena and retreat toward the door.

The leader glanced at Selena.

It happened so fast that I didn’t understand the significance of that look at the time.

Then the rest of them rushed straight at me.

Adrian had already gotten Selena outside.

“Natalie, you’ve got combat experience. Hold them off! Selena’s pregnant. I’ve got to get her out first!”

I whipped around.

The door slammed shut in front of me.

A second later, I heard the electronic lock engage twice.

He had locked it from the outside.

Adrian had personally cut off my last escape route.

And in that moment, whatever hope I’d still had left in him disappeared.

I stared at the locked door and actually laughed, because he’d probably forgotten something.

During yesterday’s game of Russian roulette, I’d removed five bullets.

There was only one round left in the revolver.

A blade slashed toward my face.

I twisted aside and fired.

The final bullet hit the leader square in the forehead.

I threw the empty gun away and ripped the knife from his hand.

The others closed in around me.

I wiped the blood from my face.

“Come on, then. Either you go down, or I walk out.”

Half an hour later, Adrian got Selena into a Moretti Security vehicle, then returned to the compound with a group of his men.

As he rushed back, there was only one thought in his mind.

Natalie had to be okay.

But when they broke through the door, he froze where he stood.

There was blood everywhere in the living room, furniture had been overturned, and broken glass covered the floor.

Every man who had broken in lay motionless in a different part of the room.

But the person who was supposed to be here waiting for him was gone.

“Natalie?”

No answer.

“Natalie!”

He moved deeper into the room, stepping around shattered glass and overturned furniture.

Then he saw it.

On the coffee table lay the ring Natalie had worn for years.

Beneath it was a medical report.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Name: Natalie Carter.

Test Result: Eight weeks pregnant.
