He Married His Enemy’s Daughter, So I Left the Mafia Family Chapter 03
Inside the folder was a marriage certificate issued by Cook County.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Adrian’s name was on it, and so was Selena’s.
A photo from the registration showed Selena leaning against him, smiling beautifully and innocently.
Adrian was looking down at her, and I knew that look too well.
It was exactly the same way he’d looked at me in that old photograph after training all those years ago.
I forced myself to keep reading.
They had registered their marriage three years ago, on December 24.
I stared at the date and forgot to breathe for several seconds.
December 24 was the anniversary of my father’s death.
It was also Selena’s birthday.
Every year on that day, no matter how busy Adrian was, we went to Mount Carmel Cemetery together.
My father’s ashes had always been kept there.
We would bring a bottle of his favorite bourbon and sit beside his memorial for hours.
The only exception had been three years ago.
By then, Adrian was already running Moretti Security.
He told me something had come up with the company in Milwaukee and that he had to deal with it overnight.
It poured in Chicago that day.
I stood alone in front of my father’s memorial from the afternoon until darkness fell.
I even defended Adrian to him.
I told Dad not to blame Adrian, even if he no longer wanted anything to do with the dirtiest, most dangerous parts of Family business.
I even told him that once everything with Selena was settled, Adrian and I would still get married.
Thinking about it now, it was almost laughable.
Adrian hadn’t been in Milwaukee that day.
He had been at City Hall in Chicago, making Selena his legal wife.
She was the daughter of a fallen Family, yet her bloodline and last name were still enough to earn her acceptance from the entire Family.
And me?
I’d been beside Adrian since we were teenagers, bled for the Moretti Family, and buried my own father. After everything, I was still just a woman who didn’t belong anywhere near the Family’s inner circle.
I covered my face, but not a single tear came.
Adrian.
You always found a way to remind me exactly where I stood with you.
I took out my phone and called Victor.
“Uncle Victor, you said the Commission’s southern enforcement unit in El Paso still needed people, didn’t you?”
There was silence on the other end for two seconds.
“You’ve refused to leave that city all these years because of Adrian. Why the sudden change?”
“Don’t talk to me about him.”
I stared at the marriage certificate in my hand.
“Just tell me if they still need people.”
“They do.”
Victor’s voice grew serious.
“But this isn’t routine work. We’re shutting down a cross-border trade route near the Mexican border, and shootouts are common down there. Have you thought this through?”
“I have. I want to leave as soon as I can.”
I paused.
“One more thing. I need you to help me move my father’s ashes out of Mount Carmel Cemetery. I’ll sign whatever paperwork is needed. You handle the Family authorisation on your end.”
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
A few seconds later, he simply said, “All right.”
After I hung up, I started packing the last of my things.
Before long, I heard a door open outside the bedroom.
Adrian came in supporting Selena.
Her eyes were still red, and one hand remained protectively over her stomach.
Several servants and guards surrounded her, already treating her exactly like Mrs. Moretti.
The moment Adrian saw me, the gentleness vanished from his face.
“The doctor says Selena needs rest. The master gets the best light, so move your things into the guest room in the north wing tonight. She’s taking the master.”
“Fine.”
I nodded.
“The master bedroom should go to the lady of the house, after all.”
Adrian visibly froze.
He probably hadn’t expected me to agree so calmly.
Over the past few years, Selena and I had fought countless times over that bedroom, that bed, and that so-called “place” beside him.
Now that I wasn’t fighting anymore, Adrian frowned instead.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.”
I turned back to my packing.
My indifference clearly irritated him.
“Now that you’ve finally learnt the rules, clear Daniel’s old things out of the living room too.”
My hands stopped.
“What?”
“Selena says those old photos and the things the Don gave Daniel give her nightmares. Daniel did lead the operation that destroyed the Rossi Family’s business, after all.”
Adrian’s voice was cold.
“She’s pregnant. Don’t upset her.”
Slowly, I turned around.
There were several photographs of my father in the living room, along with a military service medal and a commemorative coin engraved with the Moretti crest that the Don had once given him.
My father had taken bullets for the Moretti Family.
He had taken a bullet for Adrian too.
And now even the things he’d left behind had to make room for a Rossi.
An older Family servant standing nearby lowered her voice.
“Miss Carter, Selena is Adrian’s legal wife. You’d be better off not picking another fight with Adrian.”
Mrs. Moretti.
Hearing that title erased the last bit of attachment I had to this place.
I said nothing, went back into the bedroom, and closed the door behind me.
