He Made My Parents Wait, So I Stopped Waiting Chapter 06

My thoughts returned from the distant past.

On the phone, Mrs. Wentworth’s scolding had already turned into pleading.

“Winifred, I was wrong. Everything was my fault.”

“You didn’t come to the engagement party, and the ring and dress were given to Violet.”

“Sebastian waited for you for so long. Then he saw Violet standing there with your things.”

“He got furious and destroyed the whole venue. Violet said you had left, but Sebastian kept saying he didn’t

believe it.”

“He ran out of the hall and said he was going to find you. Then… then the accident happened.”

“Before he lost consciousness, he was still calling your name.”

“Winifred, I’m begging you. Come see Sebastian, please.”

“He… he might not make it through this time…”

After that, she couldn’t speak anymore.

Only painful sobs remained.

I gripped the phone.

My fingers turned white from the force.

Just before my nails dug into my palm, someone gently held my hand.

I turned and saw my parents’ worried eyes.

My mother held my hand, looked at me, and said, “Baby girl, your father and I don’t need you to worry about

us.”

“Sebastian did save you once. If you can’t let it go, get off at the next stop.”

My father looked at me too.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. Your mother and I talked about it in secret.”

“If you really still love that Wentworth boy, your mother and I will move up here with you.”

“With us around, if you suffer later, at least you’ll have a place to come home to.”

I looked at the two people who had raised me.

I didn’t know when their backs had stopped being straight.

I didn’t know when their eyes had lost their youthful brightness and grown cloudy.

I spoke softly.

“But Dad, your back was injured years ago. It starts hurting whenever the temperature drops.”

“New York winters are too cold. You’d suffer so much here.”

My father waved his hand and laughed like it was nothing.

“Don’t worry. Your dad is still strong. I can still carry you on my back and spin you around like when you were

little.”

My vision blurred.

“I don’t believe you.”

My father’s expression stiffened.

He opened his mouth, wanting to refute me, but I interrupted him.

“The friend who picked you up told me.”

“Your back hurt badly the moment you got off the train. Mom wanted to put a pain patch on you.”

“You wouldn’t let her because you were afraid the patch would smell and leave a bad impression on your

future in-laws.”

“You wore that thin suit and waited for three full hours.”

“But they never came.”

“New York is too cold, Dad.”

“Let’s not stay.”

On the other end of the phone, there was silence for a moment.

Then the line beeped twice.

Mrs. Wentworth hung up first.
