He Made Me Feel Lost, So I Became Someone He’d Never Find Chapter 04
We searched until well after midnight, and by then I was exhausted.
There was still no sign of Camille.
My parents’ house was just around the next corner.
I thought I might at least stand outside and look at it one last time from a distance. Once I left the country, I had no idea when I would see them again.
Then, through the window, I saw Camille.
My parents were there too, along with Grant and Tessa.
Outside, everything was dark. Inside, warm light spilled through the windows as everyone gathered around the little boy, laughing and talking.
Camille was home.
And not one of them had bothered to tell me.
She noticed me first and came outside.
“I made it home, but everyone completely forgot about you.”
“I wouldn’t go inside and bother everyone if I were you. You’ll just remind them that you left me stranded earlier and make them angry all over again.”
I turned away and tried to steady myself.
Camille kept talking.
“The truth is, I’ve never had a problem with directions. Your dear best friend has been taking the long way around just to drop me at Grant’s door every day.”
“And your parents have been doing everything they can to give Grant and me chances to get back together.”
I stood there stunned, unable to force out a single word.
“Oh, and one more thing. The wedding is still happening. Grant already talked to the wedding planner. I’m the bride now, and your wedding dress is being altered to my measurements.”
It took me a long moment to find my voice.
“Grant and I already broke up. You don’t need to keep me updated on your business.”
Thinking I had sounded detached enough, I turned to leave.
As if she had planned it, Camille suddenly dropped to her knees beside me.
“Elena, please. If you’re angry, take it all out on me. Just don’t hurt my son…”
Her manicured nails dug hard into my calf.
Pain shot through me, and I jerked my leg up on instinct, kicking her in the stomach.
Grant appeared at that exact moment and caught her.
“It’s my own fault for being stupid enough to get lost and upset Elena.”
“Don’t blame her. I just won’t go out anymore…”
Tears began streaming down Camille’s face.
Grant gently wiped away her tears, soothing her as if she were a child.
“Wherever you want to go from now on, I’ll go with you. I won’t let you go anywhere alone again.”
Then he looked up at me, something close to hatred in his eyes.
“Elena Whitaker, lay a hand on her or the boy again and see what happens.”
“Your parents and Tessa were right about you. You’ve had a nasty temper since you were a kid, and no wonder people don’t like you. You’re nothing compared to Camille.”
“You’re going to learn your lesson tonight.”
Hearing the commotion, my parents and Tessa came outside.
I backed away in panic, but my legs gave out and I fell to the ground.
My mother walked over and took my phone.
“We’re going to let you experience what Camille went through this afternoon. Maybe then you’ll learn your lesson and won’t do anything like this again.”
I shook my head desperately as tears spilled down my face.
“Camille doesn’t have trouble with directions at all! She’s been pretending. She lied to all of you!”
“Mom, Dad, please believe me…”
Tessa gave a derisive laugh.
“Elena, stop pretending. We all know you’re the liar.”
Grant dragged me into the car.
“I dated Camille for four years. You really think I wouldn’t know whether she gets lost easily?”
“Be good. I’ll come get you when this is over.”
Grant dumped me inside the massive maze at an abandoned amusement park.
Night had fallen completely.
Towering walls surrounded me on every side, all of them identical in the darkness. No matter how many turns I took, I couldn’t find a way out.
My legs gradually began to give out.
Grant, you got what you wanted.
I really was trapped.
And whatever love I still had left for you finally died there.
My vision blurred until everything went black.
…
The next day, the body shop called Grant to tell him the car was ready.
“We couldn’t get the bloodstains out of the seat, so we had to replace it.”
The night the car went into the ditch, Grant had only gone back for the ring. He hadn’t noticed the blood at all.
Elena had been hurt?
The thought sent him straight to the maze.
He searched the grounds with a drone, but there was no sign of her anywhere.
A wave of dread swept over him.
