He Made Me Feel Lost, So I Became Someone He’d Never Find Chapter 03

I went back to the old house and took only my documents.

If I was going to start over, I didn’t want a single thing that carried memories of the past with me.

I took my key off the ring and left it by the front door.

When I opened the door, Camille was standing right outside.

“Elena? What are you doing here?”

I gave her a cool glance and walked straight past her.

Camille hurried after me.

“I got lost again. Could you take me to the preschool?”

“No.”

I refused without hesitation and started the car.

To my disbelief, Camille climbed onto the hood and refused to move.

“Please, Elena. It’s my son’s first day at preschool. I have to pick him up.”

Reluctantly, I let her into the car.

“Look. We took family pictures a couple of days ago—the three of us.”

Camille held her phone up in front of me.

I kept my eyes fixed on the road.

“Stop distracting me while I’m driving.”

She refused to let it go.

“What, are you afraid to see how happy we are because you know you won’t be able to hide how jealous you are?”

Her voice suddenly rose.

“Elena Whitaker, if you hadn’t gotten in the middle of us, Grant and I would’ve gotten back together a long time ago!”

“You were nothing but a distraction he used to pass the time after I left. I’m the one he’s always loved. And here’s the proof!”

Camille shoved the phone in front of me again.

On the screen, she was in a white gown, kissing Grant with a snowcapped mountain behind them.

When Grant and I had been planning our wedding, he had cut an engagement photo shoot from our plans entirely.

“Engagement photos are a hassle, and they’re never anything special. Then they just sit around collecting dust.”

“We might as well have AI make them. No one would know the difference.”

For a moment, my mind went blank.

So this was what it looked like when someone truly loved you—and when they didn’t.

A horn blared.

I had nearly rear-ended the car ahead.

I put on my turn signal, pulled over, and snapped, “Get out.”

Camille climbed out, satisfaction written all over her face.

That evening, I was packing at my hotel, getting ready to fly overseas first thing the next morning so I could get settled and start adjusting to life abroad.

A knock came at my door.

A police officer stood outside.

“Ms. Whitaker, we received a missing-person report for Camille Sutton. We have reason to believe her disappearance may be connected to you, and we need to ask you a few questions.”

Grant stood behind the officer, his gaze icy.

“Elena Whitaker! You knew Camille has no sense of direction, and you still kicked her out of your car somewhere she didn’t know!”

“Her phone is off. We’ve looked everywhere and can’t find her.”

“If you’re angry, take it out on me. Leave her out of it.”

I frowned at all of them.

“Camille was the one who insisted I drive her to the preschool. She said she had to pick up her son.”

“She got out just a few hundred feet from the preschool.”

Tessa scoffed.

“If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable. The preschool doesn’t even start until next week.”

“Elena Whitaker, haven’t you bullied Camille enough? I’ve been sick of your entitled attitude for a long time!”

“I’m lying? I’m the one bullying her?”

My throat tightened as helplessness washed over me.

Grant fought to keep his anger in check.

“If you didn’t have something to hide, why would you be holed up in a hotel?”

“Stop arguing,” the officer cut in. “Finding her is what matters right now.”

That was all Grant needed to hear.

He grabbed my arm and hauled me along.

I couldn’t keep up. My foot slipped, and I hit the ground hard.

Grant acted as if he couldn’t even see the injury on my leg. He shoved me toward the side of the road.

“If we don’t find Camille, you’re going to regret it.”

I limped slowly along the road, fighting through the pain in my knee.
