He Had a Secret Wedding, I Had a Final Goodbye Chapter 05
By the time Adrian reached the hospital, Mia’s room was empty.
Anurse glanced up at him.
“You’re too late. Her family just finished the paperwork. The patient has been transferred.”
“Where was she transferred?”
“I’m sorry. I can’t give you that information.”
His expression slowly hardened.
He stood outside the empty room and called me.
All he got was a recorded message: “We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in
service.”
Then he went to the cheap motel where I had been staying.
The manager barely looked up when Adrian asked about me.
“She checked out days ago. Turned in the key and everything. She left so fast she didn’t even ask for
her deposit back.”
Adrian stood outside the empty room for a long time without saying anything.
Back home, the scandal didn’t die down just because I was gone.
At first, people were still tearing me apart online.
Some said I was playing the victim. Others accused me of using Mia’s illness for sympathy.
Then the secretly recorded video from Mia’s hospital room leaked.
Overnight, everything changed.
People started piecing together the timeline. They dug through old photos and eventually found pictures from Adrian and Vanessa’s private wedding ceremony back home the year before.
Once those photos surfaced, everything clicked.
All those years Adrian and I had been together openly, Vanessa had been there too.
There was no hiding it anymore.
This time, people weren’t so easy to fool.
Apologies started flooding my phone.
[I’m sorry. I was wrong about you.]
[So you were the one they lied to all along.]
I never replied to a single one.
Back then, my phone would often keep lighting up until the middle of the night before finally going
dark again.
I would turn it facedown and go back to sitting with Mia through another round of tests.
One of Adrian’s projects ran into trouble, and things in his family got even uglier.
When his mother learned what had happened, she smashed a cup on the spot.
“You got yourself into this mess over a woman like her?”
Vanessa wasn’t about to let it go either.
She was the one Adrian had walked out on at the wedding, and now she was the one getting dragged
online day after day.
She cornered Adrian, eyes red, demanding to know what he even wanted anymore.
Adrian kept his head down for a long time before finally saying, “Let’s get divorced.”
Vanessa froze.
“What did you say?”
“If we’re divorced, Leah will come back.”
Vanessa completely lost it.
Meanwhile, I was too busy with Mia’s treatment to care.
My days were spent running from appointment to appointment, and my nights were spent beside
her bed. I barely had time to sit down and breathe.
Later, I heard from someone else that Vanessa had been the one who arranged for the
hospital-room video to be leaked.
That was probably when Adrian finally understood something about the woman who was always crying in front of him.
Vanessa had never been trapped with nowhere to go.
She just had a habit of dragging everyone else down with her.
Vanessa started getting scared.
She wasn’t nearly as self-righteous as before. Now she kept bringing up the baby and talking about how hard the past few years had been for her too.
Adrian stopped responding.
I heard that was the first time he had ever smashed something in front of her.
“Enough.”
He threw a cup to the floor, his voice ice-cold.
“How long are you going to keep up this act?”
The cup shattered, startling even his mother.
It wasn’t as if Adrian had suddenly become a better person.
He had just finally had enough.
He couldn’t stand that even after everything that had happened, Vanessa was still desperately trying to paint herself as blameless, as if she could wash her hands of the whole thing.
And at the time, I couldn’t have cared less about either of them.
Every morning when I opened my eyes, I checked the monitor first, then Mia’s face.
Nothing else mattered.
Mia had to live.
