He Had a Secret Wedding, I Had a Final Goodbye Chapter 04

I stood on the other side of the glass, staring at Mia in the hospital bed as tears rushed to my eyes.

Her face was deathly pale, with oxygen tubing beneath her nose and needle marks covering the back of her hand. For a moment, I was almost afraid to breathe.

She was still awake when I went in.

Hearing me come in, she slowly opened her eyes. The moment she saw me, her eyes immediately turned red.

She grabbed my hand. She looked so frail she might break at any moment.

“Leah.”

I tightened my hand around hers.

“I’m here. Don’t be scared.”

She stared at me for a long time before the tears finally spilled over.

“Leah… are you really the other woman?”

I froze.

I could take whatever people said about me. I could take whatever they did to me.

But when it came to Mia, I couldn’t take it.

If she hadn’t donated a kidney to save my life, I would have died long ago. Complications from the surgery had left her bedridden ever since.

I shook my head hard, my voice raw.

“No.”

“I’m not.”

She cried even harder.

“But everyone online says you are.”

“They’re saying you won’t leave another woman’s husband alone.”

I bent over her, holding tight to her hand as I told her again and again that it wasn’t true.

Just then, the door opened.

I turned, and every muscle in my body tensed.

Vanessa walked in.

Behind her was Adrian’s younger brother, Owen Prescott.

I immediately got to my feet and planted myself between them and Mia’s bed.

“What are you doing here?”

Vanessa was carrying a basket of fruit. She softened her voice.

“I came to explain.”

“The things people are saying online are awful. I was afraid Mia might believe them.”

Something in Mia’s eyes actually brightened.

She looked at Vanessa like she had just been handed one last shred of hope.

“Vanessa, Leah isn’t the other woman, right?”

I looked at Vanessa too.

For one brief moment, I actually found myself hoping she would tell the truth, even if it was only one honest sentence.

Vanessa nodded.

“No. She isn’t.”

Mia visibly relaxed.

Then Owen laughed.

“Vanessa, why are you lying for her?”

“Leah is the side chick, isn’t she?”

The room went silent.

I whipped around.

Mia stared at him too.

Owen stood by the door, sounding almost bored, like he was talking about something completely ordinary.

“You and my brother are married now, and she’s still hanging on to him. What else would you call her?”

All the color drained from Mia’s face.

She stared at Vanessa, desperately waiting for her to deny it.

But Vanessa just stood there, pale and silent.

I watched the hope disappear from Mia’s eyes.

The monitor alarms went off.

Her breathing turned ragged, her chest rising and falling too fast as her face went frighteningly white.

“Mia!”

I lunged for the call button, then spun around and shoved Vanessa away from the bed.

“Get out.”

“Who told you to come here?”

The fruit basket hit the floor, sending fruit rolling everywhere.

Vanessa stumbled backward, panic flashing across her face.

“Leah, listen to me. Owen didn’t mean it like that.”

I stared at her, shaking all over.

“Then why didn’t you correct him?”

“You stood there and watched her condition spiral, and you didn’t say a word.”

By the time the doctors and nurses rushed in, the room was chaos.

I called for the doctor while forcing Vanessa and Owen toward the door.

“Get out.”

“Both of you, get out!”

That was when Adrian arrived.

The door had barely opened when, for one stupid second, I thought he might at least look at Mia first.

Instead, he went straight to Vanessa and steadied her.

“Are you okay?”

Vanessa’s eyes immediately filled with tears. She clutched his arm.

“Adrian, I only came to explain. Leah suddenly shoved me.”

Adrian turned on me, his expression darkening.

“Leah, are you done causing a scene?”

“Vanessa came here because she was worried about Mia.”

“She’s pregnant. Do you have any idea what a scare like that could do?”

Standing beside Mia’s bed, I suddenly felt hollow inside.

The doctors and nurses were struggling to stabilize Mia.

The monitor was still blaring.

And all Adrian could see was Vanessa and the baby she was carrying.

I looked at him and suddenly had nothing left to argue about.

I simply pointed at the door, my voice so hoarse I barely recognized it.

“Out.”

“All of you, get out.”

One of the doctors ordered everyone who didn’t need to be there to leave.

At last, the room quieted down.

It took a long time for them to get Mia stable again.

I stayed beside her bed until well after midnight, when she finally woke.

The moment she opened her eyes and saw me, she started crying.

I bent down and held her tight.

“Let’s leave.”

She trembled softly in my arms.

I stroked her hair, my own voice shaking.

“I’ll take you away from here.”

“We’ll sell the old house. We’re never coming back.”

Mia nodded through her tears.

“I’ll go with you.”

Over the next few days, I barely slept.

A week later, we finished all the paperwork.

Before takeoff, I checked my phone one last time.

There were no messages.

I snapped my old SIM card in half and never looked back.

The hospital refunded the unused balance from Mia’s treatment to the original payment method.

The note was simple.

[Patient transferred.]

Adrian saw the notification while he was at the wedding venue.

He called me over and over.

No one answered.
