Julian POV: 

The hospital lights were blinding. 

“She’s fine, Alpha,” the doctor said, looking terrified. “It was… anxiety. Her heart is perfect.” 

I stared at him. “Anxiety?” 

“Yes. No toxins. No heart attack.” 

I looked at Estelle. She was sitting on the bed, checking her makeup. 

“Oops,” she said. “I guess I just panicked. Weddings are stressful.” 

A cold dread pooled in my stomach. 

I checked my watch. 

Shit. Two hours late. 

I dialed Ember. Not in service. 

I tried the Mind–Link. Ember? 

Silence. Not a wall. A void. An amputation. 

“I need to go,” I told Estelle. 

“But Julian-” 

“Stay here!” I snapped. 

I drove like a madman. 120 mph. 

I reached the Moon Stone Altar. 

Empty. 

Chairs overturned. Flowers wilting. 

I ran to the altar. 

There, on the stone, was the Luna Crown. And a piece of white lace. 

My father, Carlo, stepped from the shadows. 

“You’re late, boy.” 

“Where is she?” I panted. 

“Gone.” 

“Find her! Track her scent!” 

“I can’t,” Carlo said. “She is no longer Pack. And you… you have no claim.” 

“I am her Alpha! Her Mate!” 

“Are you?” Carlo pointed to the mud. “Looks like you left your Mate on the road for a woman with stage fright.” 

The reality hit me. 

Good luck, Julian. 

My knees gave way. I reached for the bond. 

Nothing. 

“No,” I whispered. 

My wolf threw back his head and howled. A sound of pure, unadulterated grief.
