I Faked an Affair for a Divorce but My Cold Husband Refused to Let Me Go Chapter 04

After that, I was watched so closely that I barely got to use that phone.

Though he was still overseas, Lucas somehow cut his trip short and came back in just five days.

Once he returned, the surveillance eased a little, and I finally had a chance to use the phone again.

Using the anonymous SIM, I sent a message.

[Bro, this is pathetic. Even if she cheated, you could’ve just divorced her. Why are you locking your wife up?]

Lucas replied quickly.

[She didn’t cheat. I believe her. Joyce wasn’t the kind of person who would do something like that.]

I stared at the text, stunned.

What did that mean?

It was true I hadn’t actually gone out and found a man. I couldn’t bring myself to be with another man, which was why I’d faked it instead.

But how did Lucas know me that well?

He had been so cold to me, so indifferent.

I pushed past everything else and twisted the knife.

[Mr. Fred, you don’t know your wife like I do.]

[She has three moles, one on her ribs, one near her belly button, and one… when I ran my fingers down that line, she’d shiver uncontrollably.]

[But you were her husband. You’d been married three years. You should’ve known that already, right?]

The last line was dripping with sarcasm, because in those three years, Lucas had never touched me.

Bang.

The moment I sent it, a loud crash came from upstairs.

It came from Lucas’s study.

I jolted, trembling, and hurriedly hid the spare phone.

There was more crashing, more than once.

Then I heard Lucas coming downstairs.

Tired, he told the butler, “Have someone clean it up. The computer needed to be replaced.”

His footsteps drew closer.

I shook so badly I almost thought the next thing he would tear apart was me.

I hid under the covers and pretended to sleep.

Ever since he’d come back, the lock on my door had broken for no reason.

Lucas gently turned the handle. The room was dark, and he didn’t say a word.

In the dead silence, his heavy, ragged breathing was loud enough that I wondered if he could hear my wildly pounding heart too.

He came closer, and closer.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Lucas didn’t shake me awake. He didn’t fly into a rage and grab my throat demanding answers.

He stopped at the side of the bed.

Even with my eyes closed, I could feel it, an intense gaze fixed on my lower abdomen, like he was debating whether to confirm something.

Don’t shake. Breathe steady. Keep acting.

I stayed perfectly still.

Then the bed sank beside me.

Lucas slowly lay down next to me.

That intense stare burned into me.

I gritted my teeth. If I was going to play with fire, I’d go all in.

I decided to push him further.

Like I was half-asleep, I rolled over and nuzzled his chest.

Lucas paused. That fierce gaze softened instantly.

“Baby…” I murmured.

Lucas tensed up for a split second.

I didn’t stop. I wrapped my arms around him and used the sweetest, most clingy voice. “Baby, hold me.”

I’d thought he’d get angry. I’d thought he might even wake me with a slap.

Because I had never called him “Baby.” He would know I was calling someone else.
