Carrying His First Love’s Child Chapter 07
Josiah suddenly grabbed my hand, gripping it tightly like I was the one who had betrayed him.Â
“Why are you with him?” he demanded.Â
I yanked my hand back and snapped, “Don’t touch me. You’re disgusting.”Â
Josiah glared at me, his voice rising. “Why is Casper at your place? What’s going on between you two?”Â
“Who I’m with is none of your business,” I shot back.Â
“Tessa,” Josiah pleaded, his voice cracking, “you’ve always loved me, haven’t you? After everything we‘ ve been through, how can you just throw it all away?”Â
Casper stood to the side, watching Josiah with a curl of his lip that dripped contempt.Â
I sneered, “Josiah, I never loved you. If you’d told me from the start that I had mistaken you for someone else, I never would’ve been with you.”Â
“Y–You know…” he stammered.Â
Josiah’s face went ghostly pale. Even though he had loved Winona all along, Josiah couldn’t seem to accept that I was with Casper now. Panic crept intoÂ
his voice.Â
“Tessa, please, let me explain!” he pleaded.Â
“Explain what?” I snapped. “Explain how you slept with Winona right in front of me? You’re no better than she is. Just thinking that I was ever with someone like you makes me sick.”Â
“I…” Josiah began, but a shrill ringtone cut him off.Â
A voice on the other end sounded panicked. “Mr. Larcade, we have an emergency.”Â
Josiah snapped, “What happened?”Â
Whatever the caller said made Josiah’s face darken.Â
Without another thought, he rushed off to theÂ
company.Â
Of course, I knew exactly what was happening.Â
Just an hour ago, I had leaked evidence online- damning proof that, in order to rebuild his career, Josiah had sacrificed his entertainment company’s own talents to the wolves of the Jexburgh elite. Some had even died as a result.Â
I had carefully doctored the evidence to implicate Josiah alone.Â
One of them was Kristina Sutton, the award- winning actress Josiah had personally groomed into stardom.Â
In the past, news like this would’ve been swept under the rug before it saw the light of day.Â
But this time, it exploded. It flooded the trending topics, a fire no one could put out.Â
Netizens were furious.Â
[When Kristina jumped back then, I knew it wasn’t just depression. She was driven to her death.]Â
[She was amazing. Authorities better investigate this. Don’t let Josiah get away with murder.]Â
[She can’t be the only one. These people are way too powerful. I hope Kristina gets the justice she deserves.]Â
[If even Kristina couldn’t escape, what about the others? It’s horrifying to even think about.]Â
People began digging up Kristina’s old paintings, convinced they held hidden cries for help.Â
[She was screaming for help all along.]Â
[I can’t even imagine how alone she must have felt. I‘ m actually crying.]Â
Then someone posted the note she had written before she died online.Â
It was a raw, heart–wrenching final message.Â
It laid out, in detail, how she was coerced, threatened, and forced to sleep with man after man.Â
The outrage only grew, ballooning by the minute.Â
To make it worse, the Webb family, already bent on destroying Josiah, weren’t going to let up.Â
Josiah tried to reach out to every contact he had. No one picked up.Â
He kept calling me. But I didn’t answer.Â
Then Winona made her move. She stood in front of cameras and accused Josiah of assaulting her.Â
Josiah watched the footage in stunned silence, his face drained of all color.Â
Then he laughed hysterically. Tears streaked down his face as he laughed and laughed. This was the woman he had loved all along.Â
That night, he called me one last time.Â
I finally picked up.Â
But for the longest time, he said nothing.Â
Just as I was about to hang up, Josiah’s raspy voice finally broke through. “Tessa… this was your doing, wasn’t it?”Â
But even now, this wasn’t one–tenth of what he had done to me in my previous life.Â
“You brought this on yourself,” I said coldly.Â
“You’re in love with Casper now, aren’t you?” he questioned.Â
“Who I love is none of your business,” I replied. “But tell me, Josiah, how does it feel to be destroyed by the person you loved most? Hurts, doesn’t it?”Â
Josiah fell silent.Â
Then, without another word, he ended the call.Â
In the distance, I heard the unmistakable wail of police sirens.Â
Moments later, the internet exploded again. Josiah had been arrested.Â
Not long after that, Winona plunged to her death. When her body was found, she was completely naked.Â
She died on the same day Josiah was sentenced to death.Â
On the day of his sentencing, Josiah requested toÂ
see me.Â
I went. What stood before me was barely a shadow of the man I once knew.Â
Rumors said Jackson had people inside the prison, making Josiah’s life miserable.Â
In the harsh light of the visitation room, he flinched, his body taut and trembling.Â
When he looked at me, his eyes were dull and unfocused. “Tessa…” he whispered, “I’m sorry. I let you down.”Â
“Don’t say such disgusting things,” I snapped.Â
“Did you ever love me?” he asked, voice shaking.Â
“Love?” I scoffed. “You don’t deserve that word. If you called me here just for this crap, I’m leaving.”Â
“Then let’s talk about Casper,” Josiah blurted.Â
He gave a bitter laugh, clearly trying to drag theÂ
moment out. “Actually, I always knew this day would come.”Â
He started talking about Casper.Â
It was only then that I truly understood. Casper had spent all those years recovering from his injuries.Â
And by the time he healed, he realized I had already fallen for Josiah.Â
Only after I got together with Josiah did Casper realize that I’d mistaken him for someone else all along.Â
All this time, the one I loved was the one who savedÂ
- me.Â
Josiah gave a pained smile. “But by then,” he said, “I d already fallen for you. How could I let him win? I used every dirty trick in the book. I even threatened his parents to keep him quiet.”Â
He looked at me, his voice cold. “He’s such a hopeless romantic. There were so many chances he could’ve destroyed me, but because of you, he always held back.Â
“What right does some gutter–born orphan have to challenge me?”Â
I was seething. I could’ve torn him apart right then and there.Â
But when he mentioned the orphanage, something suddenly clicked.Â
Years ago, I did charity work with my mom.Â
I met a little boy there who was always getting picked on.Â
I started visiting him every month. My mom even sponsored him.Â
I once promised him I’d get him out of that place.Â
But then my family moved away.Â
I couldn’t stand another second. I bolted from the room and ran straight for the exit.Â
Right now, all I wanted was to see Casper.Â
And the moment I stepped out of the prison gates, there he was.Â
Casper stood waiting for me, looking at me with that same intense gaze I’d seen so many times before.Â
I ran to him and wrapped my arms tight around his waist.Â
“What’s wrong?” he murmured.Â
I buried my face against his chest. “I just… missed you.”Â
Man, did I ever miss him.
