Carrying His First Love’s Child Chapter 04
I looked up at Casper and said, “I know.”Â
Casper gave a faint smile, but his eyes remainedÂ
impossibly dark. “Do you really know who I am? You actually dare to say that?”Â
He was the man who’d give his life for me.Â
But I didn’t say it out loud. Instead, I replied, “I do know, Casper.”Â
He stared at me for a long moment, then gently ran his thumb across my lips.Â
“You’ve said that before,” he murmured. “But it doesn’t matter. This time, you came to me. I’ll make sure you never forget me. Even if this is just your way of getting back at Josiah… I’m not letting you go.”Â
I opened my mouth to speak, but then we both heard footsteps outside. Casper yanked me insideÂ
the room.Â
In our rush, something tipped over with a loudÂ
clatter.Â
The noise reached the people inside.Â
“Who’s there?” Josiah barked sharply.Â
Casper and I froze, tension tightening every muscle.Â
Before Josiah could come out, I quickly pulled Casper into my room and motioned for him to hide on the balcony.Â
The footsteps grew closer. I squeezed my eyes shut and lay down, pretending to be asleep. Josiah‘Â
s voice cut through the silence. “Tessa.”Â
My eyelashes fluttered, but I didn’t respond.Â
He stepped closer, heading toward the balcony. I held my breath, my hands clenched so tightly that my knuckles turned white. Still, he didn’t notice anything.Â
I thought he was going to leave, but another set of footsteps approached.Â
Then Winona appeared.Â
She wrapped her arms around Josiah from behind.Â
But Josiah spun around and gripped her throat, hissing venomously, “Are you really that desperate? Can’t you survive without a man?”Â
Clearly reminded that she was with other men, Josiah suddenly kissed her.Â
They probably thought it was more exciting that. way, making out in my room, while I was lying there pretending to sleep.Â
Eventually, they left and went back to the next room.Â
I sprang up and rushed out to the balcony, but Casper was already gone.Â
The next morning, as I stepped out of my room, I noticed Winona’s pajamas carelessly discarded near the door.Â
I picked them up and tossed them onto the couch. Once I got downstairs, someone called out to me,” You two were in such a rush last night, huh? Didn’t even bother closing the door and started going at it right there in the hallway. Casper and I didn’t even know where to look.”Â
I froze, then turned to look at Casper.Â
He was sitting on the couch. Our eyes met. His lips. curled into a faint, unreadable smirk.Â
So that was what he meant. When he thoughtÂ
Josiah and I were getting intimate, he must’ve mistaken Winona for me.Â
I suddenly remembered the cigarette Casper had been smoking last night. Pain stabbed my chest.Â
“I went to sleep early last night,” I said quickly, trying to clear things up.Â
The guy paused, realizing his mistake. “Maybe we saw it wrong,” he added, backing off.Â
“Mm,” I replied with a casual shrug, pretending notÂ
to care.Â
Just then, Josiah came downstairs, his eyes flickering with panic.Â
“Did you… see anything when you came out?” he asked.Â
I knew exactly what he meant. So I played dumb and answered, “Were you drunk last night? Are those clothes for me? The gifts you got me were all over the floor.”Â
He clearly hadn’t expected that response. For a moment, he just stared at me, then let out a breath of relief.Â
“I must’ve been drunk. That outfit got stained, so I tossed it. I’ll buy you a new one when we’re back,” he said.Â
I forced down my disgust and said flatly, “Sure.”Â
Trying to sound casual, I added, “Where’s Winona? k haven’t seen her all morning.”Â
Josiah’s expression turned frosty. “She was killing the mood, so I had her thrown out.”Â
But as soon as we got home, Josiah’s phone buzzed with a new message.Â
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it was fromÂ
Winona.Â
Winona: [Josiah, I think I’m running a fever.]Â
He grew increasingly distracted, checking his phone every few seconds. Eventually, he blurted out, “Tessa, something came up at the office. I need to head over now.”Â
I had my own things to take care of, and honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better excuse.Â
The moment Josiah left, I went straight to his study. Taking down someone with Josiah’s power wouldn‘ t be easy.Â
I remembered, in my previous life, when he kept me imprisoned, I once overheard him talking about collecting some kind of proof. That might be the key.Â
I turned his study upside down, searching every drawer, every cabinet, but I found nothing.Â
Then I turned to his computer.Â
After three tries, all the passwords were wrong.Â
Just as I was about to give up, something clicked. I typed in another sequence.Â
The screen lit up with a soft chime.Â
My heart was racing, but I still had to scoff.Â
He was still hopelessly in love with Winona. Even after everything, he used her birthday as his password.Â
But I had no time to dwell on it. I scanned through the computer.Â
Alas, even hours later, I hadn’t found a single shred of useful evidence.Â
Maybe it was all locked in the office safe.Â
I was just about to dig elsewhere.Â
Just then, footsteps sounded outside the door. Heart pounding, I shut down the computer and stood.Â
That was when I spotted a photo tucked in theÂ
corner.Â
I grabbed the photo and a stack of documents, then rushed into the adjacent bathroom.Â
Josiah burst into the room. He was in a hurry and didn’t even notice anything unusual. He grabbed some papers and left again.Â
Then it hit me that this must be around the time when Josiah’s joint venture hit a wall.Â
It dragged on for ages before someone I knew finally stepped in to fix it.Â
The moment he was gone, I gathered the documents and rushed back home.Â
My parents looked surprised when I walked in.” Tessa, why are you home so late?”Â
In my previous life, my parents didn’t have much, but to support Josiah, they poured every cent of their savings into his business.Â
In the end, Josiah ruined us. He drove my family into loan shark debt.Â
And he even showed my parents a recording of me being violated.Â
They begged everyone they could for help. No one stepped up.Â
Eventually, they were driven to the edge by Josiah and jumped to their deaths, right in front of me.Â
I failed them.Â
If it weren’t for me, they would’ve lived a quiet,Â
happy life.Â
Seeing them now, alive and well in front of me, I could barely hold back my tears.Â
I pulled both of them into a tight embrace, holding on as if I’d lose them again.Â
My mom’s voice was filled with concern. “What’s wrong, Tessa? Did Josiah hurt you?”Â
I shook my head. No one would ever understand what I was feeling. Tears welled in my eyes. Softly, I said, “No. I just… missed you both so much.”Â
This time around, I’d protect them with everything IÂ
had.
