After I Left They All Said They Loved Me Chapter 08
The next day.Â
Vivian sat on her bed, looking at the fully decorated room, yet Caleb still hadn’t arrived.Â
She forced a smile, tightly gripping her phone.Â
The wedding photography team was gettingÂ
anxious.Â
“Are you guys still getting married or not?”Â
“We’ve already been waiting here for two hours.”Â
Vivian eventually couldn’t hold back anymore.Â
She dialed his number.Â
The phone rang for a long time before CalebÂ
picked up.Â
“Caleb, why aren’t you here yet?”Â
“Did something happen on the way?”Â
Caleb was silent, taking a long moment beforeÂ
responding.Â
“That day, I heard everything you said from behindÂ
the door.”Â
“Before, you told me to marry you, saying it was to fulfill Evie’s dying wish. But what about now?”Â
Vivian’s face turned ashen.Â
She frantically pressed the volume button, tryingÂ
to lower the sound further and further so the people around her wouldn’t notice anything wrong.Â
“Can we just talk about this after today is over?” My sister’s voice was tinged with begging.Â
But Caleb remained entirely unmoved.Â
Just as he was about to hang up the phone, VivianÂ
took a deep breath:Â
“I know you won’t believe anything I say anymore.”Â
“We don’t have to get married today.”Â
“But I still have things regarding my sister to tellÂ
you. Where are you? The least you can do is let meÂ
come find you.”Â
Caleb finally agreed.Â
He parked his car by the Gray River Bridge,Â
constantly glancing at his wristwatch. Over theÂ
past six hours, Caleb had faced one accident afterÂ
another.Â
He had no choice but to believe.Â
That all of it was real.Â
But he could never apologize to Evie in personÂ
again.Â
Vivian rushed over frantically.Â
Pleadingly, she grabbed onto Caleb:Â
“Do you really have to do this to me?”Â
Caleb’s response was to pry her fingers off him,Â
inch by inch.Â
“What else about Evie do I not know?” he askedÂ
bluntly.Â
Vivian suddenly burst into laughter, covering her face with her hands before letting them dropÂ
weakly.Â
“I truly don’t understand what’s so great aboutÂ
Evie.”Â
“Why did every good thing always land right in herÂ
lap?”Â
Vivian absolutely refused to mention any of the suffering I endured.Â
“I just wanted to snatch everything she had awayÂ
from her! So what? What did I do wrong?”Â
Caleb stared at her in utter shock.Â
“You’re absolutely insane. You are a lunatic.”Â
Her expression froze, and she slowly pointed a finger at herself.Â
“I’m a lunatic?”Â
“Well, aren’t you? You didn’t cause even half aÂ
fraction less pain than I did.”Â
Everything she said was the truth.Â
Caleb didn’t argue: “That is why each of us mustÂ
pay the price for our actions.”Â
He turned and was just about to walk away.Â
But Vivian pulled a knife from her sleeve.Â
Seizing the moment as Caleb stepped forward,Â
she ruthlessly plunged it into him:Â
“I didn’t want to do this either.”Â
“But…”Â
Breaking down, she clutched her head: “I don’tÂ
know why things ended up like this either.”Â
“All I wanted at the very beginning was just yourÂ
attention.”Â
Caleb slowly collapsed, struggling to hold onto theÂ
nearby railing.Â
Vivian, seeing his condition, panicked and dialedÂ
emergency services.Â
She grabbed Caleb’s hand.Â
“I’ve passed the point of no return.”Â
“I wronged Evie, but I never wanted it to come toÂ
this!”Â
Gritting her teeth, Vivian dragged Caleb along asÂ
she tumbled over the guardrail and plummetedÂ
into the Gray River.Â
I watched all of this unfold.Â
Yet I was powerless to stop it.Â
It all happened too fast, and faded away just asÂ
quickly.Â
By the time they were pulled from the water, theyÂ
were already beyond saving.Â
I gazed at Caleb’s ice–cold face.Â
(Â
I couldn’t help but feel a bit dazed.Â
The very first time we met, Caleb had fallen intoÂ
the water, and I used the system’s power to pullÂ
him up.Â
It seemed as if everything had returned to itsÂ
starting point.Â
But far too many things had happened in between -things I couldn’t simply ignore.Â
They lodged right in the middle, truly acting like aÂ
thorn in my side.Â
I took a deep breath. My body gradually grewÂ
lighter, as if I had just experienced a very longÂ
dream.Â
Except in this dream.Â
I hadn’t chosen to stay in this world.Â
Instead, I returned to my original life trajectory,Â
understanding that there were some things I justÂ
couldn’t force.Â
But I was still grateful that someone had truly andÂ
authentically loved me.Â
Sunlight cascaded from above. I opened my eyesÂ
once again to a brand new journey.Â
And this time, all I asked for was to live with aÂ
clear conscience.
