After I Left They All Said They Loved Me Chapter 07
He pushed the door open.Â
Vivian jumped in fright, forcing a smile as she looked at him: “What is it?”Â
Caleb said nothing at all, only telling her to getÂ
some rest early.Â
Vivian breathed a sigh of relief.Â
But only from my vantage point could one see how dark and menacing Caleb’s expression was.Â
He went to Mom and Dad, spilling the entire truthÂ
to them.Â
Met by the horrified stares of Mom and Dad.Â
Trembling just as he had, they opened that soakedÂ
diary.Â
Mom covered her mouth:Â
“Why was she so foolish?”Â
“If we had only known sooner, would she not haveÂ
suffered so much?”Â
She shed anxious tears.Â
But that was inherently an unanswerable question.Â
Because if I were still alive, the system wouldÂ
never have allowed me to speak of these things.Â
That brass padlock had been forcefullyÂ
manifested by the system to begin with.Â
Dad’s hands trembled, his eyes glued to myÂ
framed photograph.Â
“No wonder I wasn’t hurt during that electricalÂ
short the other day.”Â
“We survived unharmed so many times before. IÂ
thought we were just extremely lucky.”Â
He took a deep breath.Â
The look he gave Caleb held a newfoundÂ
eagerness.Â
“Doesn’t the fact that Evie successfully pursuedÂ
you for her objective mean you’re not an ordinaryÂ
person?”Â
“Do you have any way to fix this?”Â
Sadly, Caleb did not.Â
He stayed silent and lowered his head, his eyes no longer daring to meet Mom and Dad’s facesÂ
directly.Â
“Mom, Dad, I have no way.”Â
“Moreover, I stood at the door and heardÂ
everything Viv did against her. Piece by piece, incident by incident. I simply cannot marry herÂ
with a clear conscience anymore.”Â
Dad frowned. He wanted to speak several timesÂ
but couldn’t articulate a single word.Â
His mind was in absolute turmoil.Â
As a father, he had already lost one daughter, and he couldn’t let his remaining daughter live inÂ
misery too.Â
But with the truth laid bare before him, what elseÂ
could he do?Â
Mom tightly grasped Dad’s hand.Â
And taking a deep breath, she made the finalÂ
decision:Â
“She must take responsibility for the mistakes sheÂ
made.”Â
“But as parents, we bear responsibility too. We failed to raise her right, and we failed to treat ourÂ
children equally.”Â
Mom stood up,walking into the bedroom with aÂ
hunched back..Â
“We’ll pack our bags and find a place right next toÂ
Willow Grove Cemetery.”Â
“We’ll spend every extra day we canÂ
accompanying Evie. I can’t even fathom howÂ
miserable she must have been alone during thoseÂ
agonizing nights.”Â
“As for this house, I’ll leave it to Viv. If we had onlyÂ
considered her feelings more before acting, things wouldn’t have turned out this way either.”Â
Experiencing such complex emotions once again.Â
I furrowed my brows, trembling with sorrow, asÂ
salty tears rolled down.Â
I was stunned for a moment. Could I still shedÂ
tears in this spectral state?Â
Watching them sit there in silence.Â
The clock hands ticked forward minute by minute.Â
I didn’t blame them.Â
But I couldn’t forgive them either.Â
Finally, Caleb stood up, bowed to my parents, andÂ
turned to stride away.Â
Under the cover of night, he tripped and fellÂ
multiple times, arriving at my tombstone coveredÂ
in bruises.Â
He fell heavily to his knees.Â
Caleb hung his head:Â
“Can you forgive me?”Â
In the dead of night, there wasn’t even a whisper ofÂ
wind.Â
Naturally, he received no response.Â
He laughed self–deprecatingly: “Even I can’t forgiveÂ
myself. I loved you so much once; why was I soÂ
easily swayed by someone else’s few words?”Â
“How could someone like me possibly be worthÂ
you protecting with your very life?”Â
“If there’s a next life, don’t ever cross paths withÂ
someone like me again. I’m not worth it.”Â
Tears flowed from Caleb’s eyes. Pressing hisÂ
hands onto the freezing paving stones, he satÂ
there motionlessly through the entire night.Â
Staring at my black–and–white portrait on theÂ
headstone, he made up his mind:Â
“I will give you an explanation and bring youÂ
justice.”Â
“I will turn myself in to the police, Evie.”
