A Ghost Stands Between Me And The Mafia Boss I Love Chapter 07
After that day, Lorenzo became a completely different person.
He rarely went to the family office in Lower Manhattan anymore. He handed most of the business to his underboss and consigliere.
He stayed home every day, cooking for me, buying flowers, and going with me to follow-ups. He even voluntarily showed me all the Vitale family’s internal schedules and accounts.
It was like he was punishing himself, trying to make up for everything.
But none of it got through to me. He was just a slightly familiar stranger.
I didn’t reject him, but I didn’t respond either.
That attitude only made him more haggard.
That afternoon, the doorbell rang.
Lorenzo was in the kitchen.
I went to answer it. Outside stood a middle-aged woman wearing sunglasses and a hat.
She took off the sunglasses. I recognized the face from the photos. Valeria.
When she saw me, tears welled up immediately.
“Celeste.”
She stepped forward to hug me.
L
I instinctively stepped back.
“Who are you looking for?”
Valeria froze.
“I’m your mother. Don’t you recognize me?”
I frowned.
“Sorry. The doctor said I’ve lost a lot of my past memories.”
I thought for a moment. Then I added, “But I read in my own diary that my mother is dead.”
Valeria’s face crumbled.
She covered her mouth and began to sob quietly.
Hearing the commotion, Lorenzo quickly came out of the kitchen.
When he saw Valeria, his face darkened,
“Why are you here?”
He stepped in front of me.
Lowering his voice, he said, “We agreed you weren’t going to show up in front of Celeste yet.”
Valeria could barely breathe through her tears. “I heard she lost her memory. How could I not
come?”
She looked at me over Lorenzo’s shoulder, as if searching my eyes for the daughter she used to
know.
But there was nothing.
The fake death she had orchestrated had not only erased her legal identity for years. It had also erased her from her daughter’s memories.
I looked at them and suddenly found it absurd.
“If you know each other, then come in.”
Lorenzo immediately turned.
“No need. She just came to check on you.”
He clearly wanted this to end quickly.
But just then, the sound of high heels came from the other end of the hallway.
“Valeria!”
“Lorenzo!”
Bianca hurried over.
She looked at the crying Valeria, then at Lorenzo. The displeasure in her eyes was obvious.
“Why haven’t you been answering my calls for days? There are still a few paintings waiting for confirmation in Chelsea, and no one has handled the Rinaldi contact line for me. You promised you’d help.”
Lorenzo didn’t even look at her.
“Leave.”
Bianca froze.
“What?”
“I said leave.”
Her face flashed with panic and anger.
“Lorenzo, how can you—”
“Get out!”
He finally lost control completely.
Bianca stumbled back in shock.
She couldn’t believe that the man who had always fixed everything for her would speak to her like
this.
In the end, she turned and left in tears.
Valeria stood at the door, unable to say a word.
Lorenzo shut the door right in her face.
