A 12-Year Love Turned to Nothing Chapter 08
After that day, Chase never came to see me again.
Even the medical fund transfers he sent me got intercepted by Alice.
Without money, I got moved from a VIP room to a standard room, then from a standard room to a shared ward The conditions were poor, the medication was basic at best, and my body struggled to heal.
A month later, the last of my savings ran out, and I had no choice but to check myself out.
Running my fingers over the long, ugly dark-red scar snaking across my chest, a rage so vast it threatened to drown me welled up inside.
The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was go straight to the police station to file a report.
“I want to report a crime. Someone stole my mother’s body.”
The police moved fast. In under a day, they’d traced the body’s whereabouts through hospital security footage.
The truth had been sitting there the whole time, one phone call away, and Chase had believed Alice based on nothing but a few whispered lies. It would almost have been funny, if it weren’t so infuriating.
Based on the footage, my mother’s body had been taken away by Alice and Olivia, working together.
The police pulled their financial records next. Alice had bought a used chest freezer on SwapMart.
Their theory was that my mother’s body had most likely been locked away inside it.
“Ms. Sutton, we’re moving to make the arrest right now. We’ll bring the suspects in and get your mother’s remains back to you.”
I clenched my fists so hard my nails cut into my palms.
Prison alone was too light a punishment for Alice.
Watching her show off photos of some five-star wedding venue on social media, I felt the corner of my mouth curl into a cold smile.
I wanted her to hit rock bottom at the exact moment she thought her life was at its most dazzling.
“Officer, making the arrest right now risks tipping them off.
“Alice’s wedding is in three days, and the other suspect, Olivia, will be there too. A day that important-there’s no way either of them skips town before then. It’s the perfect time to move in.”
After some discussion, the officers agreed to my plan.
“All right. Three days from now, we make the arrest.”
Three days later.
Chase had booked out the Aurora Grand, Greth City’s top luxury wedding venue.
A sea of flowers drowned out the crystal chandeliers, and Chase didn’t blink at ordering a hundred tables of a lobster feast that ran into the thousands per table.
Everyone said Chase was head over heels for his new bride.
I adjusted my earpiece, reported my position to the officers waiting outside, and walked into the banquet hall at
an even pace.
By the time I arrived, the ceremony was already halfway through. The bride and groom were exchanging rings in front of family and friends.
The moment I appeared, every brow in the room furrowed.
Olivia was the first to speak, gritting her teeth. “This is a wedding for a happy couple. What’s a witch like you doing here? Nora, get out of my best friend’s wedding right now.”
Susanne, Chase’s sister, who’d once been nothing but warm toward me, chased me off with a cold glare of her own. “Nora, have some dignity left, at least. Even if you crash this wedding, my brother’s mind isn’t changing. You and Alice aren’t even in the same league. Any fool can see who he’d pick.”
The rest of our mutual friends chimed in one after another. “Causing a scene is against the law, you know. Nora, whatever we used to be, don’t make us call the police.”
Chase looked at me, the tips of his ears going red, clearly holding something back. “Nora… are you really here to crash the wedding? Don’t make a scene.”
I didn’t waste breath on any of them. I grabbed the laptop from the stage tech and plugged in a USB drive.
“Crashing a wedding sounds like too much effort. I’m not here to crash anything. I just wanted to give the happy couple a wedding gift.”
I clicked the mouse, and the huge screen behind me began playing a video.
