The Fireworks Weren’t for Me, the Baby Wasn’t Mine Chapter 09

The Fireworks Weren’t for Me, the Baby Wasn’t Mine Chapter 09

The hospital window was cracked open slightly.

The evening breeze blew in, scattering the

pungent smell of disinfectant and taking with it my last shred of longing for Harrison.

I leaned against the headboard with Leo nestled in

my arms.

His breathing gradually leveled out; he had finally let go of the day’s terror and was sleeping

peacefully.

I took out my phone and accepted the transfer

Harrison had sent me.

Perhaps from now on, in his eyes, I would be a woman who could be settled with money.

He always thought money could erase all harm.

That it could buy out my eight years of youth, compensate for his debt to Leo, and redeem the marriage he personally crushed.

But from the beginning, he never understood.

I never wanted his money.

I wanted his heart, and the boy who once fought

by my side and had eyes only for me.

I wanted the husband who would make vows to

me and our unborn child.

Now, all of that was gone.

The only thing I could do was try to secure some

benefits so that Leo and I could have an easier

time in the future.

I pulled out the ID and bank cards hidden in my

bag.

I had prepared these in secret beforehand.

Aside from enough savings for us to live on, I took

nothing else.

The jewelry, accessories, and luxury goods.

Harrison had given me were all left behind in that

cold estate.

Every one of those items was a reminder of how

ridiculous this marriage was and how foolish I had

been.

As night fell, Harrison didn’t return.

I guessed he was probably with Scarlett Brooks.

He had likely already put his exwifewho had

miscarried, lost blood, and lost hopeto the back

of his mind.

Good. It gave me the chance to leave.

In the early morning hours, I gently woke Leo.

He rubbed his sleepy eyes but was exceptionally obedient, holding my hand tightly and whispering,

Mommy, we’re leaving secretly, without telling

Daddy.”

My heart felt a pang; I fought back the stinging in

my eyes and nodded: Yes, let’s go. To a place

where it’s just the two of us.”

I didn’t alert anyone. I handled the selfdischarge.

paperwork and quietly left the hospital with Leo.

The taxi drove through the night in North Haven.

Outside, the neon lights flashed, and the city was

as prosperous as ever.

But this city no longer held anyone or anything I

cared about.

The plane gradually climbed into the clouds.

Holding Leo, I watched the silhouette of North Haven shrink through the window and finally let

out a complete sigh of relief.

It was all over.
