The Fireworks Weren’t for Me, the Baby Wasn’t Mine Chapter 08
The smell of disinfectant was pungent and cold.Â
It crawled into my nose bit by bit, pulling me out ofÂ
the darkness.Â
I struggled to open my eyes. All I saw was a sterile.Â
white ceiling.Â
My thoughts slowly returned, and my vision.Â
focused on the small figure leaning over the edge.Â
of the bed.Â
Leo was guarding my hospital bed.Â
His head was resting on his arms, sleeping fitfully,Â
his small hand tightly gripping my sleeve, andÂ
tears were still hanging on his lashes.Â
I gently stroked his soft hair.Â
“Mommy…”Â
Leo woke up immediately.Â
He opened his moist eyes, saw that I was awake,Â
and his eyes instantly welled up again.Â
He whimpered softly, “Mommy, you’re finallyÂ
awake, I was so scared…”Â
“Mommy is fine,” I whispered hoarsely to comfortÂ
him.Â
Just as I was about to prop myself up, I caught sight of Harrison sitting on the sofa.Â
He was wearing headphones over his messy hair, staring at a laptop on his lap, occasionally nodding; he was likely in a video conference.Â
The table in front of him was piled with contracts and an unfinished work journal.Â
Clearly, he had been watching over me for a longÂ
time.Â
Harrison ended the video call and looked at me:Â
“Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”Â
I didn’t say anything.Â
He didn’t ask further but took out his phone andÂ
tapped the screen a few times.Â
Soon, my phone chimed with a bank transferÂ
notification.Â
I glanced at it.Â
The number was staggering–enough for Leo and me to live comfortably for several lifetimes.Â
“Focus on recovering. Tell the doctor if you needÂ
anything; I’ve arranged everything.”Â
Harrison pinched the bridge of his nose andÂ
closed his bloodshot eyes.Â
“You need to rest after this miscarriage.”Â
“I promise I’ll buy a house in your name. You pickÂ
whichever one you want and send it to me. YouÂ
and Leo will live there from now on, and ScarlettÂ
won’t bother you.”Â
I waited quietly for him to finish.Â
“I’ll come over twice a month,” he added.Â
“Is that necessary?” I asked.Â
At this point, why bother with these superficialÂ
gestures?Â
He suddenly looked up, his gaze heavy as he watched me: “It is necessary.”Â
“You are my wife, and Leo is my son.”Â
“We need time to be a family.”Â
One sentence, light as air, yet heavy as lead.Â
Wife?Â
But he already had another pregnant woman byÂ
his side.Â
Son?Â
But he had openly loathed his own son and hadÂ
trampled on our dignity just to protect ScarlettÂ
Brooks.Â
I sighed.Â
An endless exhaustion weighed on my heart,Â
leaving me with no energy to argue with him.Â
I simply closed my eyes, turned my head away,Â
and stopped looking at him.Â
Harrison stood up and straightened his clothes.Â
“Scarlett is waiting for me at home for dinner.”Â
“I’m going back first. Text me what you want toÂ
eat, and I’ll bring it over in a bit.”Â
He took another look at Leo.Â
Ultimately, he didn’t say much more and left theÂ
room.Â
Only then did I open my eyes.Â
Looking at the anxious Leo beside me, I reachedÂ
out and pulled him into my arms, gently patting hisÂ
back.Â
“Leo, do you want to leave this place withÂ
Mommy?”Â
“We’ll go somewhere where nobody can find us. Just you and me, and we’ll be happy togetherÂ
forever.”Â
Leo’s eyes instantly lit up.Â
He nodded vigorously, his voice firm and full of hope: “Yes! Leo wants to go with Mommy!”Â
“Okay.”Â
The last shred of hesitation vanished.Â
Eight years of history and a broken marriage-Â
there was nothing left worth holding onto.Â
From now on, I only wanted a quiet and stable lifeÂ
with my child.Â
I booked a flight for tomorrow night.Â
Harrison Sterling, this time, I won’t look back.Â
You can have the heir you want, and the life youÂ
want; I’m giving it all to you…Â
But my child and I will leave your world forever,Â
never to meet again.
