I wouldn’t budge, and Harrison wouldn’t yield.
Until the last shred of his patience was exhausted.
“You want to play it like this? Fine,” the words were forced out between his teeth. “Forget the house and the money.”
“You’re staying in this house!”
The car sped all the way back to the estate.
Harrison half-pushed and half-dragged me to the door and opened it.
A small figure threw himself into my arms.
“Mommy!”
I knelt down, pressing the child’s face into my neck so he wouldn’t see my swollen eyes.
“Be a good boy, Leo… Did you listen to Martha today?”
Martha walked over with a worried look.
“Ma’am, Leo hid in his room all day. He didn’t take his medicine, and he wouldn’t let the doctor near him.”
“He only came out when he saw you were back.”
Harrison let out a scoff.
He looked away, not even glancing at Leo, and turned to go upstairs.
Leo’s hand barely brushed the edge of his father’s jacket.
He failed to catch it.
“Daddy…”
That night while sleeping, I heard Leo whimpering.
He was hugging an old stuffed animal, his tears soaking into the cotton, his small body trembling.
“Mommy, does Daddy not want me anymore?”
“Is it like everyone says? That Leo is stupid, and stupid people shouldn’t be born.”
“I made Daddy and Mommy stop loving each other. It’s all my fault…”
My heart felt like it was breaking.
I held him, so choked up I could barely speak.
“No…”
“Leo, they’re lying. Don’t listen to them…”
“Yes, it’s true,” Leo interrupted. “Last time Daddy promised to drive me to buy toys, but a lady came, and Daddy kicked me out of the car.”
“The lady called me a waste. She said my brain was sick, and that’s why Daddy is always so angry.”
“Mommy, that lady called you names too. She said a fool gave birth to a dummy. I got so mad I bit her… after that, Daddy stopped talking to me.”
My child, whom I cherished as a treasure, was treated like this by them.
Rage completely shattered my reason.
I pulled out my phone and called Scarlett Brooks in the middle of the night.
“Are you even human?!”
