Her Joke Cost Him Everything Chapter 08
The moment the rescue room doors swung shut behind Sloane, I stood in the corridor and felt my
stomach turn.
It wasn’t sympathy. It was pure, unadulterated revulsion.
The results came back fast: she had miscarried.
Seven weeks.
I stared at that number and started to laugh.
During those seven weeks, I had been pulling back–to–back night shifts.
I was running codes, doing rounds, and wrestling lives back from the brink in the OR.
All while I was worrying about Jacob’s mother, contacting hospitals across state lines, monitoring
the donor registry.
I fought through a mountain of red tape to coordinate a dozen different procedures, just to get that
marrow on a plane.
And Jacob?
While he was holding me, telling me Sloane was just a charity case, just a sister, and that I was overthinking things.
He was busy crossing every line there was.
I guess his “sister” was code for “someone to crawl into bed with.”
No wonder he was willing to trade my life for hers in the last one.
By the time the recovery room doors opened, Sloane was awake.
Her face was a mask of gray despair, and she started hyperventilating the moment she saw Jacob.
“The baby is gone! Our baby is gone! Jacob, you can’t leave me now! You promised you’d marry
me!”
Mr. Harrison stood nearby, his face dark enough to cause a storm.
“You killed my wife and you think you’re getting into this family? Dream on.”
He turned to the police officers, his voice like ice.
“Handle this by the book once she’s stable. Detain her. Sue her. I don’t care.”
Sloane completely lost it.
She lunged for Jacob’s hand, but he jerked away as if she were covered in toxic waste.
The room was a disaster.
I stood at the door, not even caring enough to step inside.
Then, Mr. Harrison caught sight of me. His entire demeanor softened instantly.
“Carey, the Harrison family owes you a massive apology.”
“Jacob was a fool, blinded by that bitch, but you’re the only one I ever recognized as his future wife.”
“I’ll make this right. Jacob will never speak to that creature again.”
I almost laughed in his face.
His wife was dead, his son was a cheater, and his mistress just had a miscarriage, yet he was still trying to talk to me about being his “daughter–in–law“.
As if I wasn’t a person, just a high–end piece of furniture that fit their brand.
“Don’t bother,” I said. “As of right now, Jacob and I are nothing.”
I turned and walked away.
Behind me, Jacob finally seemed to snap out of his trance. He stumbled after me.
“Carey!”
I didn’t look back.
When you throw out the trash, you don’t go back to check the bag.
I just didn’t realize, that Jacob and Sloane’s karma, was going to hit them so much harder, than I ever expected.
