Her Joke Cost Him Everything Chapter 09
With his wife gone, Mr. Harrison turned all his fury on Jacob.
In front of lawyers and the entire extended family, he formally disinherited him.
He cut his cards, fired him from the firm, and seized his penthouse and cars.
He even put out a word that any company partnering with the Harrisons was forbidden from hiring
him.
On the day of the funeral, Jacob wasn’t even allowed inside the chapel.
Mr. Harrison even told the detectives. “If there’s a criminal case for my wife’s death, the Harrison family won’t protect anyone, including Jacob.”
“He signed the waivers, he gave the verbal confirmation. He has to own his mistakes.”
The word spread through Chicago instantly. Jacob Harrison was dead to his father.
That’s when Jacob started stalking me.
Some days he’d be outside the hospital with flowers, his eyes bloodshot and desperate.
Other days, he’d be kneeling on the sidewalk after my night shift, begging for a second chance.
He said he was sorry.
He said Sloane tricked him.
He said only after his mother died did he realize who truly mattered.
I didn’t give him so much as a glance.
Belated love is cheaper than dirt.
Besides, what he gave me wasn’t love. It was a knife to the back.
Then one day, while I was home on a day off, my phone started exploding with messages from colleagues.
I opened the work group chat to see dozens of messages flying by.
The stars of the show were two very familiar faces.
Apparently, Sloane had started her acting routine again in lockup.
She was clutching her stomach, screaming about a hemorrhage, and claiming the hospital hadn’t cleared her out properly.
She demanded a re–examination.
The guards transported her back to the hospital.
The second she walked in, she started screaming for me, claiming I was the only one who
understood her condition.
Luckily, I wasn’t there.
My coworkers were all saying I’d dodged a bullet.
But as fate would have it, Jacob had shown up at the hospital that day to find me, clutching a bouquet of roses.
They ran into each other in the surgical corridor.
Sloane’s eyes turned red the moment she saw him.
“You won’t even visit me in jail, but you’re here every day for her?”
Jacob didn’t have any tenderness left. “Shut up! Why didn’t a freak like you just die already?”
That was the breaking point.
Sloane was already on the edge of a psychotic break. Hearing that pushed her over.
No one noticed she had swiped a scalpel earlier and tucked it into her sleeve.
Before anyone could react, she pulled the blade and lunged.
“Go to hell, Jacob!”
The blade sank deep into Jacob’s abdomen.
The hallway turned into a bloodbath.
People were screaming, guards were wrestling for the knife, and nurses were rushing to apply
pressure.
Even as they pinned Sloane to the floor, she was shrieking hysterically.
“It’s your fault! You all drove me to this! Why should I be the only one in hell?”
When the final photo hit the group chat, I stared at it for a long time.
In the picture, the floor was covered in blood.
Jacob was clutching his stomach, his face as white as a ghost.
I only had one thought. One stab wasn’t enough.
It didn’t hurt a thousandth as much as my death did.
Too bad she didn’t finish the job.
