Stealing My Kid’s Gourmet Lunch for $10 Chapter 06
The moment Ashley saw Trevor, she lunged forward, grabbing onto him like a literal lifeline while sobbing a messy river of tears.
“Honey, thank God you’re finally here! If you’d come any later, this bitch would’ve pushed us over the edge! She didn’t just beat me up. She even forged a fake video to frame me! You have to make her pay for this!”
Trevor’s face twisted with anger at the sight of Ashley’s swollen cheek. He whipped his head around to glare a me, jabbing a finger so close that it nearly grazed my nose.
“So you’re the one who hit my wife? Do you have any idea who I am? One word from me, and I can make sure you vanish from this city!”
Bellowing at the top of his lungs, Trevor pulled a stack of business cards from his cardholder and threw them at
“Take a good look at who you’re messing with! I’m the regional director of Northstar Capital. I could snap my fingers and crush you like a goddamn insect!”
The business cards were scattered across the floor. I looked down at the words “Northstar Capital” printed on them, and by then, I wasn’t even angry anymore. I just felt a wave of pity for how utterly stupid this man was.
“Northstar Capital?” I sneered. “Trevor, you certainly have a lot of nerve. Does Ryan know you’re using the company to throw your weight around?”
Trevor froze for a moment at the mention of his boss, but then his face twisted back into a sneer.
“Don’t give me that crap! A bottom-feeder like you isn’t worthy of addressing Mr. Sullivan by his first name. I’ll make this easy for you. Apologize to my wife and pay us a million dollars in damages, or this isn’t over!”
I didn’t bother responding to his threats. Instead, I pulled out my phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker.
The call connected after a single ring. A man’s voice came through, respectful and clearly nervous.
“Ms. Reed, is everything alright? Did someone on my team do something to upset you?”
The moment that voice came through the speaker, Trevor, who had been brimming with arrogance just a moment ago, went completely still.
He stared at the phone in disbelief, looking as if he’d seen a ghost.
“Ryan,” I said, my voice cold. “Northstar Capital’s hiring standards have fallen quite a bit, haven’t they? It seems like just about anybody can be a regional director these days. In fact, a man named Trevor Brooks is standing in front of me right now, demanding that I apologize to his wife.”
On the other end of the line, Ryan Sullivan sucked in a sharp breath, his voice rising so abruptly that it nearly cracked.
“What? Trevor Brooks? That idiot! Ms. Reed, please calm down. I’ll take care of it right away and see to it that you’re satisfied with how it ends!”
By then, Trevor was shaking like a leaf. Others might not have recognized the voice, but as a senior employee at Northstar Capital, he knew exactly who it was-the head of the company, Ryan.
More importantly, Ryan had addressed me as “Ms. Reed”. The mysterious majority shareholder of the conglomerate that owned Northstar Capital was also a Reed.
Trevor’s knees buckled, and he dropped to the floor with a thud, his shirt instantly soaked in cold sweat.
Before he could utter a word of apology, his own phone began to ring. He answered it with trembling hands, and Ryan’s furious voice exploded from the receiver.
“Trevor, you moron! Do you have a death wish? If you want to commit career suicide, don’t drag me down with you! Do you have any idea who you just insulted? That’s Ms. Madison Reed, the largest investor in our company!
“You’re fired, effective immediately! Moreover, the legal department has already gathered evidence of the kickbacks and embezzlement you’ve received in the last two years. We’re turning everything over to the financial crimes unit. You’re going to rot in jail for the rest of your life!”
The call ended abruptly.
Trevor’s phone clattered to the floor as he slumped to the ground like jelly, his eyes filled with terror and despair.
