His Heart Beat for Her, So I Left Chapter 06

His Heart Beat for Her, So I Left Chapter 06

Serena’s POV

I had been in this small southern coastal town for

almost a month.

I had run away without a destination and ended up

in coastal pack territory.

The early spring sea breeze still carried a chill. It

drifted through the open window, cool and crisp

against my skin, sharpening my senses.

I slipped on my house slippers and shuffled to the

door, still halfasleep. Mrs. Hayes, my landlady.

was standing outside with an insulated food

container.

Sweetheart, I made you some chicken stew.”

After she found out I had come from a northern

pack, she knocked on my door every single day to bring me something warm to eat.

Mrs. Hayes was outgoing and warmnatured. She liked to drop by, and since I enjoyed having

company, I let her come.

Got anyone special in your life?the old woman. asked, sitting across from me with a kind look in

her eyes.

I took a bite of the chicken. I shook my head.

I did, actually. We were together for ten years, but we split up recently.”

Mrs. Hayes let out a little gasp. She looked more heartbroken than I was.

Ten years. That bond must have been so deep.”

I didn’t say anything.

I thought back to when I first got here. I couldn’t sleep at night. I even dreamed about Jacob. Then I would wake up crying,

But slowly, I got used to it. Without him, life still

went on.

Mrs. Hayes patted the back of my hand. Heartache comes with love, she said gently. Don’t dwell on the past. Better days are ahead.”

I smiled and nodded a little.

Thanks to Mrs. Hayes, I got a job at her daughter Evelyn’s design studio. It wasn’t a big placeonly six of us total, all young. After work, we gossiped and ate potato chips and pretzels together, leaving our workspaces a total mess.

Evelyn was in her early thirties. She was sharp and efficient at work but funny and easygoing in

person.

Quit slacking and tidy this up!Evelyn tapped Lily on the head with a folder. You eat the most and never stop chattering! What if a client walks in? They’ll think we’re totally unprofessional!”

Lily jumped up and grabbed a broom. I’m on it, I’m on it! Cut it out! You’ll scramble my brain and we’ll get nothing done!”

The whole group was messing around like total chaos of comedians. I held my stomach, laughing

nonstop at my desk.

Alright everyone, let’s tidy up,” Evelyn said. We’re grabbing seafood boil to welcome our new

teammate!”

The restaurant was at the end of the boardwalk. It was an old, wellknown spot. The host led us to a private room, then brought in four large cases of

beer.

I stared in disbelief.

Lily winked at me. Don’t sweat it! It’s our little tradition. New team members have to drink along

with us!.”

I’m not the shy type. I grabbed a bottle, popped it

open, and downed half of it in one go.

Nice!”

Wow, the new girl can really drink!”

Come on, everyone finish yours!”

After a few rounds of drinks, my face was burning. I slumped in my chair, my thoughts moving slowly. I stared blankly at the steaming pot of seafood on

the table.

Drinking’s no fun by itself.Lily set her empty bottle down on the table. Let’s play truth or dare!”

The bottle spun around three times and slowly stopped with its opening pointing at me.

Truth!”

How many exes have you had? How long was your longest relationship?”

I mumbled, Just one. Together forten years.”

The whole table burst into shocked murmurs.

We already broke up.I smiled. It’s justhe didn’t love me enough, so I left. Haha. Nothing much to say. Let’s keep going.”

The bottle spun again. It landed on me once more.

Now it’s dare!Lily jumped up. Call your ex and give him an earful!”

Call him! Call him!”

Yes! Curse that jerk out!”

I pulled out my phone. It took me a while to focus my eyes on the screen. I had put Jacob on my blocklist the day I left.

Call him! Let him have it!Lily was getting worked

  1. up.

Okay,I said.

I didn’t know why I agreed. Maybe it was the alcohol. Or maybe it was the ten years of pentup grievance and rage that had been building up in my chest with nowhere to go. I needed to let it out.

It connected after just one ring.

Hello.”

All I could hear on the other end was heavy

breathing.

Jacob, you jerk!I shouted. I was such a fool to fall for you all those years ago!”

I wasted so many years on you!”

I gave you ten years of my life, and this is what I get?”

Don’t bother waiting for the mating ceremony. Just get the hell away from me and stay away!”

I was out of breath. But after that whole outburst, I actually felt a lot better. Why should he be the only one who got to make me feel awful? I wanted him to feel even a fraction of the pain I felt.

Serena, where are you?Jacob’s voice was low and hoarse. Have you been drinking? Who are your

with?”

Mind your own business!I snapped back. My life isn’t any of your concern.”

Everyone at the table clapped and cheered. Lily was fiery and impulsiveshe grabbed the phone. and started cursing him out too.

Jacob sat through the entire thing without saying

a word.

Finally, he just asked, Where are you?”

What?Lily’s eyebrows shot up. Oh really? Are

you coming over here to pick a fight?”

She rattled off the address in a flash. If you dare show up, we’ll beat you to a pulp, you piece of

trash.”

All she got in response was a dial tone.

My head was pounding. I barely remembered telling Evelyn to hold onto my phone for me so I

wouldn’t lose it. After that, I blacked out

completely. I had no idea what I said or did.

I only vaguely felt someone pick me up in their

arms.
