His Heart Beat for Her, So I Left Chapter 07
Serena’s POVÂ
When I woke up again, I was back at my rentalÂ
apartment.Â
My head throbbed as I stepped out of the bedroom, pressing two fingers to my temples. There was someone standing in the kitchen.Â
The sizzle of frying eggs cut clearly through the quiet morning.Â
It was Jacob.Â
“Almost ready. Have a seat. You had way tooÂ
much to drink last night,” he said.Â
“I left oatmeal on the stove, so help yourself.”Â
My demeanor turned icy in an instant.Â
“Get out.”Â
“Who let you in?”Â
Jacob didn’t move. He slid the fried egg onto a plate and set it in front of me. His eyes were lined with heavy red veins. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night. His voice was rough and hoarse.Â
“Just eat something, okay?”Â
An uneasy tension hung in the air. I was still groggy from the alcohol, my head pounding so hard I couldn’t think straight. I didn’t want to talk to him. I just wanted him gone.Â
I reached out and impatiently knocked the plate to the floor.Â
“I’m not eating!”Â
The hot fried egg landed on the back of Jacob’s hand. In an instant, it left a bright red burn.Â
He didn’t say a word. He just crouched down andÂ
picked up the broken pieces of ceramic from theÂ
floor.Â
“Can you not listen to a single word I say?” I lostÂ
my patience completely. I planted my foot firmly on the back of his hand, pinning his palm against the sharp shards. Vivid red blood seeped acrossÂ
the grout lines of the floor.Â
Jacob bit back a pained groan.Â
“I told you to leave,” I said.Â
“I don’t need your false sincerity. Jacob, you’ve always been so stubborn and prideful. So, didÂ
Cecilia cast you aside? Is that why you’re crawlingÂ
back to me?”Â
I lifted my foot.Â
Jacob slowly stood up. He grabbed a paper towel and haphazardly covered the injury.Â
“Feel better?”Â
“If it still isn’t enough, you can hurt the other oneÂ
too.”Â
I didn’t understand what was going through hisÂ
head.Â
“You’re insane.” I dragged him toward the door.Â
“Quit putting on this pathetic act for my sake.”Â
Jacob stumbled backward into the hallway and hit the wall. Dust coated his white shirt, leaving him disheveled and pitiful.Â
“…”Â
Before he could finish, I slammed the door shut.Â
I thought Jacob wouldn’t come back. With his pride, he would never put up with that kind of humiliation.Â
But the next morning, I ran into him in the hallway.Â
Jacob was leaning against the railing, staring outÂ
the window. The faint smell of cigarette smokeÂ
hung in the air. A breakfast bag swung lightly fromÂ
his fingertip.Â
“What are you doing?”Â
He turned his head quickly. He rubbed his dark, tired eyes and held the breakfast out to me.Â
“I was waiting for you. Didn’t want you skippingÂ
breakfast again.”Â
I let out a scoff.Â
“Classic for the future Alpha of Blackwood Pack.Â
You’re all smooth operators, trying to win peopleÂ
over with cheap favors.”Â
I pushed past him and walked straight outside.Â
That evening, when I got home from work, JacobÂ
was still sitting in the hallway. The breakfast bag from that morning was on the floor by his feet.Â
He had stayed here all day.Â
“Why are you still here?”Â
Jacob stood up. His legs had gone dead fromÂ
sitting all day, and he stumbled briefly beforeÂ
regaining his balance.Â
“…”Â
“Jacob, haven’t you gotten the message?” IÂ
suddenly felt a little sorry for him.Â
“It’s over between us. There’s no going back, notÂ
ever.”Â
Jacob went stiff. He tried to force a smile, like heÂ
was trying to keep up appearances. But the sweatÂ
on his forehead and the slight tremble in hisÂ
hands had already given him away. No matter howÂ
hard he tried to hide it, raw terror lingered clearly inÂ
his gaze.Â
Finally, he just made a pained face.Â
“Is there any way we can come to an agreement?”Â
he said.Â
He bent down, picked up an envelope, tore it open,Â
and pulled out a few sheets of paper.Â
“I’ll give you the house and the car. Put everythingÂ
in your name. Or if you want shares in the packÂ
company, I can talk to the board and set some aside for you.”Â
I didn’t know what to say for a moment. Finally, IÂ
spoke.Â
“Do you honestly believe affection can be boughtÂ
and traded?”Â
Jacob panicked immediately.Â
“That’s not what I meant. I just… I just…”Â
He clenched his jaw, like he was finally ready to put everything on the line.Â
“Serena, I’m begging you to give me one more chance. I want to make things right between us. We shared ten years together… You can’t let all of that go, can you? I promise I won’t contact CeciliaÂ
anymore.”Â
He reached for his phone.Â
“I’ll block her right now. I’ll erase every trace of herÂ
from my phone.”Â
The sky had turned completely dark. The oldÂ
hallway light flickered on and off.Â
Jacob frantically deleted everything, then held outÂ
his phone to me.Â
“Serena, check it. Or tell me whatever else youÂ
want. I’ll do anything, absolutely anything. JustÂ
give us a second chance.”Â
I held my ground and said nothing–just as he hadÂ
done to me countless times before.Â
Jacob’s shoulders sagged. He buried his face inÂ
his hands, and a broken, muffled sob broke free.Â
His body trembled violently, his shouldersÂ
heaving..Â
But they failed to evoke the slightest emotion fromÂ
- me.Â
“Just go,” I said.Â
“No matter what you do, there’s no going back forÂ
us.”
