His Heart Beat for Her, So I Left Chapter 05

Jacob’s POV

I scrolled through the posts one by one.

[Made him roast ribs today. He ate two huge. plates. So happy!]

The photo showed Serena smiling next to two

empty plates.

[He seems upset. He’s been quiet all day. No ideal

what to do.]

[Five years together. He still hates taking pictures, but I snuck a photo of him while he slept. He’s so goodlooking. I want to post it so badly, but infuriating Jacob refuses to let us go public!]

[Seven years together. I asked him if he’d ever go

through with our mating ceremony. He just kept

telling me to wait. I started to wonder if he truly

loved me.]

[Jacob picked me up a flower on his way home.

from work. I forgive him.]

[Ten years down. Countdown to our mating.

ceremony.]

The last post was from the night we fought. Only

five words.

[Maybe it’s time to go.]

A private social media account with almost no followers. It was filled with tiny snippets of everyday life, and together they told the story of one woman’s entire decade. Her sincere youth, weighed down with unspoken burdens.

Suddenly, I remembered something Serena once

said to me.

She said, I’m okay with keeping us a secret. It’s

not because I’m giving up or backing down. It’s just because I love you. When you love someone, you’d do anything for them. But if I ever sense your love fadingeven a little bitI’ll walk away, Jacob.”

I had been watching the news at the time. I just.

mumbled mmhmmwithout really listening.

I’d brushed her words off without a second

thought.

Now I tried desperately to remember, but I couldn’t

recall what her expression had looked like.

In my memory, Serena had always been strong

and resilient. I couldn’t remember seeing her cry

more than a few times.

From the very beginningwhen she first stopped

me, stumbling over her confession, chasing me for

more than two weeks to prove her feelingsto later, when she helped me build my empire from the ground up.

Serena went out alone to bring in business for me.

She drank round after round to smooth over

business talks, and eventually ended up with at bleeding stomach. She stumbled time and again,

yet always picked herself back up.

Back then, times were so tough that I was ready to

throw in the towel. But Serena was my constant ray of sunshine. She would hold my arm and give

me that bright, gentle smile.

Hey, you can’t even beat me?”

Jacob, our future Alpha is way too weak.”

Want me to protect you? Let me look after you

instead. You can lean on me for once!”

Those days felt so far away now.

I leaned back and let my head hit the chair in

frustration.

I suddenly regretted reaching out to Cecilia.

Serena was nothing like Cecilia.

When I was with Serena, I never thought about Cecilia. It was only when I’d had too much to drink and saw that vaguely familiar face that I would force myself to revisit that unresolved old flame.

I ran a hand down my face.

In that moment, I had to admit the truth.

I’d

grown completely dependent on Serena.
