Upon seeing that there was no reply, Faye tapped away on her screen. “Did you still not see the meteor shower? It looks like everyone else in the group chat saw it. You should go look for Richard – he has a solid view from where he is.”
She thought it over after sending the message and added, “You shouldn’t tell him that I’m the one who sent you there. It’s for the best that the rest of the group doesn’t know about our relationship yet, so let’s not blindside
them now.”
She still felt uneasy after sending that message, so she quickly fired off a string of texts while Xavier was distracted watching the meteor shower. “I’m not saying we’ll never go public. I just think that since we just graduated, we should give everyone some time to process it.
“You and I will start our jobs right after this trip, so we really need to focus on our careers first. I’ll organize a class reunion right away once things settle down at work and we get established in Sundermere.
“I’ll announce it to everyone then and let you propose to me right then and there. I’ll absolutely agree to it. How does that sound, Caleb?”
She returned to her seat once the messages were sent, and Xavier immediately snuggled up next to her. She could smell the crisp, clean scent of fresh grass–the very thing she had been obsessed with since her first year of university-drifting into her nose.
She quietly adjusted her breathing and heard him ask, “Is it true that you got an offer from a major company, Faye? I heard it from Richard.”
She nodded and replied, “I’m heading in the day after tomorrow to fill out my onboarding paperwork.”
Xavier flashed a brilliant smile that rivaled the meteor shower above. “That company is strictly merit-based; no amount of money could buy a position there. You’re truly amazing, Faye!”
She was so swept up in his praise that she didn’t even notice him sliding closer and wrapping his arm around her. “I’ve been told that the company allows its staff to secure positions for family members. Is there any way you could give me an internal recommendation?
“It would be really convenient for us to commute from home later on since my place is quite close to the company.”
Faye froze, her posture tightening immediately. She looked away from Xavier’s expectant gaze and stammered, “1-I can’t put in an internal recommendation for you…”
“Why not, Faye? I’ve checked the info on their company website, and even if you haven’t officially started yet, you can still submit an internal referral once you have the offer. It’s literally just a matter of putting in a quick word for me.”
He hesitated briefly before asking solemnly, “I-Is it because you don’t intend to help me, Faye?”
“T-That’s not it!” Faye stammered defensively. She bit the bullet and confessed once she noticed the disappointment in Xavier’s gaze. “I actually got in through an internal referral myself, so I don’t have the authority to refer anyone else. How about you look into other job openings instead, Xavier?”
Xavier instantly pulled his arm back. “Who put in the internal referral for you?”
Faye naturally didn’t dare to bring up Caleb’s name, as internal employee referrals were strictly reserved for spouses or romantic partners, so mentioning Caleb would mean exposing their relationship to everyone.
Yet, when facing Xavier, Faye just couldn’t bring herself to admit it; after all, Xavier was someone she had loved deeply in the past. She had later developed feelings for Caleb and stayed with him for three years, but she had never truly let go of Xavier.
That was why she had yielded to Richard’s plan, why she hadn’t gone public when she was supposed to, and why she had ultimately chosen Xavier for this trip.
She thought that in the future, she would definitely settle down and live a good life with Caleb. She just wanted to follow her true desires this time, treating it as a way to put a full stop to the passionate love she once had.
Thus, she casually said that a relative had internally recommended her and then accompanied Xavier back to the hotel.
Xavier remained silent the whole time, though, eventually murmuring that he would return to his room to get some rest first.
Faye instantly ran over to the floor Caleb’s room was located on the moment the door closed. He didn’t open up no matter how much she knocked, though, nor did he answer her calls or reply to her texts.
