In the meantime, the meteor shower sparked a flurry of activity in the group chat, with everyone from the trip blowing up the group chat with photos as soon as the first meteor shower streaked by.
It was just unfortunate how regular smartphones could barely capture anything worthwhile, especially since the hotel wasn’t even the ideal viewing spot.
Therefore, when Faye uploaded a crisp image of the meteor trails taken with a professional camera, it caused a massive stir in the group chat.
“You really can’t beat the official observation point and a professional camera!”
“You have to be honest with us, Faye. Did you spend a lot of time getting ready to watch the meteor shower with Xavier tonight?”
“I noticed the camera you two were using earlier-and that lens on the camera alone was custom-fitted. Your whole rig must have cost four figures, right?”
Upon seeing the group chat, Faye couldn’t help but smile. That camera and lens of hers cost roughly 4,500 dollars, a graduation gift Caleb had asked a classmate from the photography club to help put together and give to
her.
It was a pity his suitcase couldn’t fit it all; otherwise, she could have brought the whole kit, and the photos of the meteors would definitely have been even more stunning.
She suddenly paused mid-thought as she recalled Caleb’s suitcase. She had lifted it before they left, and it was so heavy they had to pay an overweight baggage fee at check-in.
She figured that since she was planning to go public with their relationship, Caleb would be handling the luggage anyway, and managing one bag was easier than two. She had packed her clothes, cosmetics bag, and camera inside, leaving Caleb struggling just to get the zipper closed.
Richard unexpectedly suggested drawing lots to pair people up right after they arrived at the hotel.
Faye had gone to Richard privately, planning to tell him she and Caleb were in a relationship and wouldn’t take part in the draw.
Richard shot her a knowing look before she could even say anything and whispered secretively, “I’m giving you the final push here. I’ll have you and Xavier go first when we draw the balls in a minute, so look for the one with a round bump on it-I kept that one aside specifically for the two of you.”
Faye was stunned, feeling a sudden surge of emotion deep down that made her heart race.
Richard leaned in close and whispered, “Xavier already gave the green light. You get what that means, right? You shouldn’t let all my hard work go to waste, Faye. If you pass this up, the next time you two see each other might just be at the annual class reunion.”
Faye wouldn’t be able to see Xavier again for an entire year if they could only meet again during the yearly class reunion, which felt way too far off. She eventually agreed to go along with it. She felt around for the number seven ball and naturally ended up staying with Xavier.
She had even gone over to Caleb’s room at one point to grab her things. She figured it would lighten his suitcase and make it a lot easier for him to carry around. She thought that would certainly make things much easier for Caleb.
She suddenly felt a bit uneasy. She opened the group chat and scrolled through but didn’t see a single photo from Caleb he hadn’t posted any pictures or even joined the conversation.
She furrowed her brow and sent him a message, asking, “Did you not watch the meteor shower? You can still see some from the hotel. If you can’t see it, go up to the rooftop. It’s stated in the brochure that you should be able to see it from up there; otherwise, you can ask the people at the front desk where the best view is.”
She had just sent the message when Xavier suddenly called out to her. “Get a photo of me with the meteor shower, Faye. I can’t seem to get a good shot with my phone.”
She immediately snapped out of her thoughts and set her phone down to take Xavier’s picture. She spent over an hour running around taking pictures until the memory card was full, since Xavier wanted to take photos together after the solo shots.
She then went to look for a backup memory card. She looked at the photos as she transferred them to her laptop, noticing that the folder was completely filled with photos of Xavier or the two of them together.
She realized then that Caleb had bought her the camera in the first place because of her passion for photography, intending for her to use it to capture memories of the two of them. She suddenly felt a pang of guilt, prompting her to cancel the file transfer altogether and pick up her phone.
