Wait—Did I Steal Your Best Buddy While You Were ‘Missing’? HELL YES!! Chapter 04
After that night, all I had to do was look at him a certain way and Callan would come over.
We fit together way better than Jasper and I ever did.
Callan actually paid attention, made sure I was good.
The whole experience was just… better.
Add in the physical differences and honestly? I regret not doing this sooner.
Why did I waste so much time on a dead man?
Callan didn’t notice anything weird-because I’d deleted all those chat logs.
Whenever I got the chance, I’d check the group chat on his phone.
Nowadays, I stopped looking for Jasper.
And he started panicking.
Jasper (tagging everyone): What’s going on? Why did Lexie stop searching for me?
Fox: Relax man, she’s probably just exhausted.
Jasper: No way. She’d look for me no matter what. Should I go back?
Princess Scarlett: NO. Hold out longer. You’ll ruin everything if you go back now.
Jasper: I can’t just sit here. I need to check on her tomorrow.
Princess Scarlett: Are you brain-dead? I planned this whole thing and you’re gonna throw it away?
She’s playing you-trying to force you out. I know how girls think.
Princess Scarlett: Hey, let me handle her.
Jasper backed down after a minute.
Then: Fine. Whatever you say.
But he still couldn’t help himself.
That night, he called Callan. Used a payphone
Phone rang right as I shifted on top of Callan.
Wait Did I Steal Your Rest Duddy While You Were Missing’2 HELL VESIL
I hit accept and held it to his ear.
“Hey man. I can’t stop worrying. What’s actually going on with Lexie?”
Callan barely managed to get the words out: “She’s… fine.”
“Dude, what’s wrong with your voice? You got someone there?”
“How’d you know?”
“It’s obvious. Did I interrupt something? You gotta introduce us-”
I cut him off. “Are you done? Focus.”
Dead silence on the other end.
Then Jasper’s voice got cold: “Callan. Who are you with right now?”
Callan snapped back to normal, lowered the phone volume.
His voice smoothed out. “Nobody you know.”
“That sounded exactly like Lexie.”
“You’re trippin’. I’m hanging up, don’t call me when I’m busy.”
He ended the call and pulled me closer, voice going soft:
“Keep going… harder… I’ll pay attention this time, I promise.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t. What if Jasper shows up?”
Callan went still.
I continued: “He’s hiding at that rental house in Malibu, right? He could drive here in half an hour.”
“You… you heard the call?”
“Actually, I saw him days ago. In person.”
Callan’s face did this complicated thing.
After a long silence, he finally processed it.
“So you’ve known this whole time. That he never actually went missing.”
“Yep.”
“And you’re not pissed?”
“I was. Then I realized being mad at someone like that just messes with my health. Not worth it.”
The day I saw Jasper, I didn’t confront him.
Didn’t scream or make a scene.
Didn’t ask why he lied.
The guy’s already trash. Was I supposed to expect something decent from him?
I stared into Callan’s eyes. “What about you? Got anything to tell me?”
Callan was the only one in their group who pushed back against the fake disappearance plan.
I was dying to know what made him cave.
“I owed him one.”
Callan looked relieved.
“Jasper did me a favor once. He guilted me into helping.”
He paused. “But I shouldn’t have lied to you. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. I’m glad you were part of this.”
“What do you mean?”
I grabbed his chin and smiled.
“Want to help me get back at them?”
