Thirty Years, One Mistake Chapter 04

Thirty Years, One Mistake Chapter 04

Luca hung up first. He snorted coldly. “Fine. Go ahead and make a scene.”

The dial tone drummed against my heart.

Only when I lay on the operating table and the anesthesia flowed through my veins did I finally escape the relentless pain.

The day I found out I was pregnant, I was so happy.

I thought it would be a new beginning for our little family.

The baby was only a few months away.

Happiness was within reach.

But now, it was all gone.

After a day of rest, I got another message from Luca.

[Back in New York. Family dinner tonight. Don’t give my parents attitude.]

[Linda, you’re not a little girl anymore. Know when to stop.]

I replied that I would come.

By the time I pulled myself together and arrived at the family estate, both families were already there.

Luca sat next to me.

He looked at my turnedaway face and sighed.

“You’re still mad?”

He took out a necklace and pressed it into my hand.

“My fault, okay?”

“A peace offering. Smile for me?”

My palms were cold.

Just yesterday, before I went into the operating room, Erin had posted an update.

A messy bed covered with gifts.

She unwrapped them one by one — limitededition crocodile bag, custom perfume, diamond bracelet…

Only the gold necklace, she said with disgust, “This style is so old. I don’t want it.”

The person filming laughed fondly. “It’s my birthday, you’re the one getting presents, and you’re still complaining? Fine, I’ll just throw it away.”

I loosened my grip and let the necklace fall to the floor.

Luca frowned. “What more do you want? Take it or leave it.”

Mrs. Falcone smiled, trying to smooth things over.

“I heard you went all the way to Boston for Luca’s birthday, but he was too busy to spend time with you. That was wrong of him.”

My mom laughed.

“You’re such a child. You’re about to be a mother — you shouldn’t act so spoiled. It’s not good for the baby.”

“Mother?” Luca froze. He turned to me in disbelief.

“Linda, are you pregnant?!”

He jumped up, a smile spreading across his face.

“I’m going to be a dad, right?!”

The coldness in his eyes melted into undisguised excitement.

I didn’t look away. I watched every flicker of emotion.

But was this real or fake?

I couldn’t tell anymore.

I didn’t care anymore.

The two elders laughed. “Look at this silly boy.”

I said quietly, “No.”

“I aborted the baby.”

The atmosphere froze.

Luca’s excitement died on his face.

His eyes darted. He forced a smile. “Linda, don’t joke like that.”

I didn’t answer. I pulled the divorce agreement from my bag.

I smiled slightly. “Luca, I’ve seen Erin.”

“If we don’t divorce, are we supposed to let her be the other woman forever?”
