But when the door swung open, everyone froze.
The wardrobe, desk, and nightstand were completely bare. Not a single piece of clothing, book, or personal item remained. It was as if she had never lived there at all.
Only a cracked family crest and a scrap of cheap cloak lay in the fireplace.
Vivian picked up the charred crest, panic written across her face. “Elaia… she actually left?”
Lorne refused to believe it. He yanked open every drawer, searched the wardrobe and under the bed, until he found the teleportation scroll beneath the desk.
He recognized the keepsake he had given her, and his eyes reddened at once. For the past three years, Elaia had always kept it within easy reach, afraid she might not be able to summon him in time if danger struck.
Now it had been tossed under the desk like trash.
Dorian’s face was livid. “That ungrateful brat! How could she abandon everything and betray the family!”
“She’ll come back.” Roland spoke up, his voice hard. “I’m issuing a family warrant. I will not allow her to betray the Rayne family.”
With that, he pulled out a communication crystal and issued the warrant as head of the Rayne household.
