They Waited for My Sister to Wake, So I Called Off My Wedding Chapter 09
Iris dropped to her knees in front of me.
My brows furrowed. I looked at her warily.
“What are you doing?”
She didn’t speak. Tears fell first. She grabbed my pant leg and wouldn’t let go.
“Elara, I knew you wouldn’t just leave Mom and me alone.”
“Elara, I was wrong. Please don’t abandon me.”
“Elara…”
No matter what Iris said, I was unmoved.
Even though she was truly pathetic now, her hair a mess, her clothes mixed with grease and dish soap.
I still didn’t feel a bit of pity.
I knew if I did, I would be betraying the child I used to be. I would be betraying the me from five years ago
who had lost everyone.
I looked at her in silence. After a long time, I said one thing.
“If you hadn’t abandoned me so many times, maybe.”
“But that’s not what happened.”
The moment I said it, Iris’s hand froze on my pant leg.
The memories from childhood rushed back into her mind.
It wasn’t just stealing her sister’s spot. Many times, when their parents wanted to take both sisters out, Iris
would throw tantrums and cry.
She said if they brought Elara, their parents would be distracted. What if something happened to her?
And what had happened on the wedding day–no one could forgive that.
At that moment, the words ‘don’t leave me‘ could no longer leave her mouth.
Seeing she was no longer clinging to me, I turned and walked away without looking back.
After a few steps, Evan called.
“Elara, let’s go set off fireworks.”
“Okay.”
I went to the beach to find Evan. I thought he’d bought sparklers.
When I got there, it wasn’t just Evan. There were also friends from our time at the Swiss Alps Research Base.
Brilliant fireworks bloomed above my head. The fireworks formed a line of words.
“Elara, I hope you’re always happy and free to be yourself.”
They shouted their wishes together.
Fireworks and tears sparkled in my eyes.
I quietly said to myself, “Yes, Elara. I hope you’re always happy and free to be yourself.”
The next day, I left home behind and set off for somewhere I could finally thrive. And my friends will always
be cheering me on.
