Not long after, Mom thought of wearing her gold bracelet when out visiting relatives. However, she couldn’t find it even after searching through the entire wardrobe.
She traced back her steps and realized that Julia was the only one who had gone through her wardrobe in the past. At once, my parents knew what had happened and confronted Julia at once.
“Julia! Did you take Marie’s gold bracelet?” Dad demanded, pointing a trembling finger at Julia. His face was as dark as thunder, and his eyes were filled with anger and disappointment. He never thought that the “daughter” he’d trusted so much would actually steal from them.
Julia didn’t look the least bit concerned and stood there defiantly with her hands on her hips, feigning indifference.
“What gold bracelet? I don’t know anything about it! Don’t you go around accusing innocent people. I didn’t touch any of your things. Maybe you just misplaced it or lost it accidentally.”
“There are only the three of us in this house. Who else would have taken it if not you!” Mom said, her eyes red and her voice choked with emotion.
“We’ve treated you well! We even adopted you, bought you clothes and jewelry, and spoiled you rotten! How could you steal from us? Have you no conscience?”
“Treated me well?” Julia asked with a disdainful sneer. “You’ve only ever treated me like a free maid. You were only nice to me because of Genevieve’s money. Now that she’s stopped giving you money, you start nitpicking and finding fault with me. Did you really think that you could just walk all over me like that?”
She paused, her eyes gleaming with greed, and took a step forward. She stared at my parents and said bluntly,” Besides, you both said that you’d leave this house to me. Now, if you transfer the house to my name ahead of time, I’ll serve you well, cook for you, and clean for you. If not, don’t even expect me to take care of you in the slightest!”
“In your dreams!” Dad roared, pointing at her, his body trembling in fury. “We bought this house with our own hard-earned money! Why should we just give it to you like that? You’re a liar, a cheater, and a fraud! We were blind to have ever adopted you!”
“You’re not giving it to me?” Julia said, plopping down on the couch and beginning to wail loudly. “Then, I’ll just keep living here like this, eat and drink for free, and do absolutely nothing around the house. I’ll see what you can do about that!
“You’re both old and useless anyway! You can’t even cook for yourself if you didn’t have me. You rely entirely on me, and yet, you still dare to talk back to me?
“I’m telling you, if you don’t agree to my demands today, I’m going to make a whole scene in the entire neighborhood and let everyone know how terribly you’re abusing your ‘daughter’!”
My parents stared at Julia, who was now beginning to throw a huge tantrum with a ferocious expression on her face. They were stunned into silence.
They couldn’t believe that Julia turned out to be so greedy, defiant, and unreasonable. It suddenly dawned on them that her prior gentleness, thoughtfulness, and concern were all just an act. She was only after their money and property.
Regret instantly washed over them like a tidal wave. They finally thought about me, their actual, biological daughter, and how good I was to them.
They remembered how I always wired them their monthly allowance without fail, how much effort I put into
hiring Julia to take care of them, and the hardships I’d endured while working in Berrington to give them a good life.
However, it was too late. They had pushed their own daughter away, only to take a swindler in her place.
Julia kept her word and really began living off them, eating and drinking for free, doing nothing at the house, and bossing my parents around like her personal maids.
