The next time I met Sue was three months later.
I was halfway through my current project and was signing another contract with my company.
When I realized that our divorce was not yet finalized, I contacted my divorce lawyer.
“Mr. Goodwin, I’ve communicated with your wife, but she insists on meeting you. Otherwise, she will not agree to the divorce.”
I had wanted to file a lawsuit when my lawyer first informed me about it.
On second thought, however, I didn’t want to waste time on this.
I agreed to meet Sue.
She brought Tina to meet me at a cafe. Having not seen her for a year, she looked much more haggard and not as bright and stylish as before.
The moment Tina saw me, she greeted me enthusiastically, “Dad!”
If it were in the past, I would have been so glad to hear her greet me so brightly.
But right now, I felt extremely calm, almost emotionless.
“Harley, we’re not getting any younger. Mom fell sick upon knowing that you want to divorce me…” Sue began.
I cut her off before she was done talking. “I’m just here to talk to you about the divorce. I don’t want to talk about anything else.”
Perhaps because I sounded so distant, Sue’s eyes welled up with tears immediately.
Tina spoke up. “Dad, I don’t understand why you have to divorce Mom.”
I looked at Tina, but didn’t offer her an explanation.
“Sue, I’m sure you know very well how things between us ended up this way. Sign the papers, and we can end things amicably.”
I spoke clearly and firmly, which made Sue burst into tears.
“Must you do this? Can’t you give me another chance?”
I took a deep breath. “You lost your chance a long time ago. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with a wife who always sides with other people.”
With that, I placed the divorce papers before her and turned to leave the cafe.
From now on, my life would be my own.
