The Price of Their Fortune Chapter 11
The criminal proceedings moved quickly.
At Alder County Superior Court, the self–proclaimed spiritual adviser, Silas Crowe, could no longer maintain his mystical performance.
As prosecutors presented bank transfers, private messages and recordings of his group arguing over money, sweat gathered across his forehead.
His associates turned on one another and blamed everyone but themselves.
They faced charges for large–scale fraud, conspiracy, child trafficking, kidnapping, and the exploitation of minors through a fabricated occult scheme.
Delia stood at the defense table and wept.
She insisted she’d been a manipulated believer and claimed she’d wanted children only for the good of our family.
Then prosecutors played recordings of her discussing how to use the boys to transfer fortune and how to divide the payments promised by my parents.
The judge found that she knew the children had an uncertain and suspicious origin yet actively helped plan the false paternity scheme. She received a substantial prison sentence under Franklin law.
Travis received three years for aggravated assault.
During sentencing, he kept his head lowered and never looked at me.
I didn’t know whether he regretted hurting me or merely regretted that the promised reward had vanished.
My parents avoided prison after cooperating with investigators, accepting probation, and entering no–contest pleas to lesser assault charges, but their reputation among relatives and neighbors was destroyed.
The last time I entered their house, they sat in an empty living room. My mother’s hair had turned white, and my father stared silently at the floor. We didn’t speak. When I closed that door, I knew it might be forever.
After my body recovered, I sold every asset tying me to Cedar Hollow and prepared to begin again elsewhere.
Sunlight filled Cedar Hollow Metropolitan Airport on the morning I left, bright enough to chase the shadows from every corner. I calmly deleted every contact connected to my former life.
The plane climbed above the clouds, and I watched the city shrink until it disappeared beneath them.
I felt no consuming hatred and no longing.
It was like finally tearing away a bandage that had fused to festering wound.
Removing it had been bloody and agonizing, but once the decay was cleared and clean air touched new skin, healing could begin.
The question that had followed me to my first death “Why would they do this to me?” finally had an answer.
There had never been a supernatural curse or a mystical destiny.
The cause was ordinary human ugliness.
Greed bad blinded them with fantasies of effortless wealth and perfect fortune.
Ignorance had persuaded them to surrender judgment to an invented legend.
And selfishness had allowed them to sacrifice another person’s safety and life without hesitation
The love they spoke about had never been meant for me as a living person.
They loved only the tool they imagined could deliver the fortune they wanted.
At last, the nightmare was over.
The road ahead would still contain hardship.
But my steps felt light, and my eyes remained fixed forward
From that day on, my life would belong to me.
Every betrayed trust and every trampled kindness had become fire that strengthened me.
In a new city, I would build a new life, meet people worthy of love, and spend my future doing things that mattered.
