The Mate He Forgot Chapter 14
Rhett stared at her coldly, not saying a word.Â
Arabella finally sensed she’d said something wrong. She rushed to explain, her voice all sugar and nerves. “I didn’t mean to forget the stories you used to tell. I’ve just been soÂ
overwhelmed planning the ceremony…”Â
“Rhett, don’t be mad, okay? Once we’re married, you can tellÂ
me all over again, hmm?” She leaned in and tugged at hisÂ
sleeve, trying to be cute.Â
But all he felt was disgust.Â
“Arabella,” he said sharply. “Are you seriously still lying toÂ
me?”Â
“You’re not the one who stayed with me back then. You’reÂ
not her!”Â
His voice rose with each word, and before she could react,Â
he shoved her back.Â
Arabella stumbled, completely off balance. She tumbledÂ
down the steps and landed right at the edge of theÂ
ceremonial platform.Â
Gasps filled the room as she hit the ground hard. Her gownÂ
tore across the bodice, and she scraped her arms and kneesÂ
trying to break the fall.Â
Flashes exploded from all directions–phones, cameras,Â
whispers.Â
She winced in pain, but her first instinct wasn’t to cry. It wasÂ
to cover her face. To hide. To disappear.Â
She scrambled to her feet, ready to chase after Rhett, toÂ
explain–but he was already onstage, grabbing the mic.Â
“I’m calling this off,” he said, his voice echoing through theÂ
hall. “This ceremony is over.”Â
“Arabella is not my mate.”Â
Gasps turned to stunned silence.Â
Then he turned and walked out of the church withoutÂ
looking back.Â
He didn’t get far before running straight into Regis andÂ
Viviana.Â
“Rhett? Where are you going? The toasts are about to start-”Â
Viviana began, confused.Â
He didn’t answer. He tossed the small box at their feet like itÂ
burned his hands.Â
“That’s why,” he said. “You know exactly why. You and your precious daughter have been lying to me from the start. AndÂ
I don’t forget betrayal.”Â
He turned on his heel and left.Â
Regis and Viviana stood frozen. Only when they saw the boxÂ
did realization dawn–and panic.Â
Viviana snatched it off the floor. “Come on. We need to talkÂ
to Arabella. Now.”Â
Inside the main hall, the murmurs were already bubbling.Â
“Wait, what just happened? They were halfway through theÂ
ceremony…”Â
“You haven’t heard?” someone whispered. “Alpha Rhett went blind a few years ago and lived outside the pack for a while.Â
They say he met someone back then–someone important.Â
He’s been trying to find her ever since.”Â
“Are you saying Arabella faked it? Oh, damn. No wonder heÂ
snapped like that. That’s brutal.”Â
“Honestly? She had it coming. Stealing someone else’s placeÂ
like that? Disgraceful. What’s wrong with the Grayscale familyÂ
-raising a daughter like that?”Â
The words weren’t loud, but Arabella heard every single oneÂ
of them.Â
She clenched her fists so tight her nails pierced the skin.Â
Blood welled up from her palm, but she barely noticed.Â
Viviana arrived just in time, throwing herself betweenÂ
Arabella and the cameras. “Back off! Stop filming!” sheÂ
snapped before pulling her daughter into the hallway.Â
“Arabella, what happened? Did you slip up? Why would Rhett suddenly realize the truth?” Viviana’s tone was tight withÂ
worry.Â
“I didn’t say anything!” Arabella cried, her voice breaking. “It had to be Isla. She must’ve set me up–there’s no other wayÂ
Rhett would’ve figured it out.”Â
“She’s always resented me. She couldn’t stand that I finally had something good. And now she’s made a fool of me inÂ
front of everyone.”Â
Arabella’s chest heaved, eyes wild with frustration. “You can’t just let her get away with this. She needs to pay for whatÂ
she did.”Â
Viviana cupped her daughter’s face. “Sweetheart, it’s okay. We’ll handle this. She’s your younger sister, not your equal.Â
She should know her place.”Â
Regis nodded. “Exactly. We’ve always done what’s best forÂ
you. We’ll make this right.”Â
Arabella sniffled, tears finally falling. “O…okay… But what about Rhett? He knows I’m not the one now. He looked atÂ
me like I was a stranger.”Â
“We’ll talk to him,” Viviana assured her. “Worst case, we goÂ
straight to the Echelon Pack. This mating ceremony will goÂ
- on. Grayscale’s reputation is on the line.”Â
Arabella smiled weakly. “You really are the best, Mom.”Â
She leaned into her mother’s arms, letting the warmth soak in. But as she did, something caught her eye–Regis wasÂ
holding a small box.Â
Her stomach dropped.Â
She recognized it.Â
It was the same box Isla had handed Rhett in the morning-Â
the one she’d ordered thrown away.Â
Why was it still here?Â
“What’s that?” she asked.Â
Regis opened it casually.Â
Inside was a folded piece of paper.Â
Arabella glanced at it–and froze.Â
Printed across the top in bold black ink were four words:Â
Legal Severance of Kinship.
