The Mafia Devil in My Inbox Chapter 06
After dinner, Dante insisted on driving me home.Â
The ride was quiet. Neither of us spoke for aÂ
while.Â
Then Don DeLorenzo glanced at me and suddenlyÂ
asked, “Hannah, let me ask you something.”Â
“Go ahead.”Â
“What would you do if someone broke up with youÂ
because they misunderstood you?”Â
I laughed, “Obviously, I’d clear up theÂ
misunderstanding.”Â
“And how would you do that?”Â
I thought for a moment, “Spend more time withÂ
her, I guess. Let her get to know the real you.”Â
“If they understand who you actually are, they’llÂ
realize you’re not the person they thought yourÂ
were.”Â
Dante’s eyes locked onto mine, a slow smileÂ
appeared on his lips.Â
“I see.”Â
For some reason, he seemed like a completelyÂ
different person.Â
The gloomy, dejected look I’d seen before wasÂ
gone.Â
There was light in his eyes now.Â
Although I wasn’t particularly close to Dante, I couldn’t help feeling pleased that my adviceÂ
seemed to have helped him.Â
The next morning, I had barely opened my eyesÂ
when my phone started ringing.Â
It was Orlando.Â
“Hannah, I need your help!”Â
I groaned, “What is it this time, Don Riccardi?”Â
“Don DeLorenzo wants to inspect our OrlandoÂ
branch. He also wants to do some sightseeingÂ
while he’s here.”Â
“So?”Â
“He specifically requested that you come along.”Â
I immediately sat up, “I can say no to that, right?”Â
“No.”Â
Orlando didn’t even hesitate, then he added,Â
“Dante said that if you go, he’ll double hisÂ
investment in our group.”Â
I rolled my eyes, “And why exactly should I care?”Â
“Fine.” Orlando sighed dramatically, “I’ll double your year–end bonus too.”Â
“You’ll pay off your father’s debt much faster.”Â
I was silent for half a second.Â
“Okay. When do we leave?”Â
“Now.”Â
I packed a suitcase in record time and caught theÂ
next flight to Orlando.Â
When I arrived, Dante had just landed as well.Â
Before I left, Orlando had repeatedly warned meÂ
about him.Â
“Dante is extremely picky. Make sure he enjoysÂ
himself.”Â
So I booked him into the best hotel in Orlando.Â
Two luxury suites. One for him, and one for me.Â
After dropping off our luggage, we prepared to head to the branch office according to theÂ
schedule.Â
Because everything had happened so suddenly that morning, I hadn’t had time to eat breakfast.Â
My stomach was growling.Â
Dante had been walking ahead when he suddenlyÂ
stopped.Â
“Wait,” he turned to Cesare, “Let’s get something toÂ
eat first.”Â
A warmth spread through my chest.Â
Dante always looked so cold and intimidating onÂ
the outside. But somehow, he was surprisinglyÂ
considerate.Â
After eating, we headed to the Orlando branch.Â
I introduced him to several department heads,Â
gave him an overview of ongoing projects, andÂ
helped facilitate discussions with localÂ
employees.Â
By the end of the visit, Dante seemed quiteÂ
satisfied.Â
The problem was…he showed absolutely noÂ
intention of leaving.Â
Instead, he announced that he’d like to spend aÂ
few more days exploring Orlando.Â
When Orlando heard the news, he was thrilled.Â
Apparently, he immediately decided to fly over asÂ
well.Â
Along with his fiancée, Lydia.Â
The moment I heard that, I declared that I wasÂ
leaving. Immediately.Â
Unfortunately, Orlando practically begged me overÂ
the phone.Â
“Hannah, please. Dante specifically requested thatÂ
you stay.”Â
“If you leave and he changes his mind about theÂ
investment, what am I supposed to do?”Â
I remained silent.Â
Orlando sensed that I wasn’t convinced, so heÂ
sweetened the deal.Â
“How about this? I’ll increase your salary by twelveÂ
percent.”Â
That got my attention.Â
Twelve percent.Â
Now he was speaking my language.Â
“Deal!”
