The trial was on a Tuesday. I didn’t go. Ethan did. 

He brought me the judgment. 

Derek was convicted of false imprisonment, 

aggravated assault, and distribution of private. 

sexual images. He was sentenced to six years in 

state prison. 

Sophie, as an accomplice, was sentenced to two 

years. 

I stood up and walked to the window. “Ethan.” 

“Yeah?” 

“Pull the old environmental impact report from last 

year. The one that failed. I want it resubmitted.” 

“Also, the land on the east side of the city. No. 

commercial complex. Turn it into a public park. 

Triple the design budget if you have to, I want the 

best.” 

He took out his phone and started typing. 

“And the Foster Holdings employees. No layoffs. 

Salaries stay the same. Benefits stay the same.” 

“That’s generous.” 

“It’s not generosity.” I turned around. “Those 

people didn’t do anything wrong. They shouldn’t 

lose their jobs because of him. Besides, we have 

the money.” 

Ethan blinked, then laughed out loud. “Fine. You’re 

the one with the money. You call the shots.” 

The sunlight outside the window was beautiful, 

the entire city spread out below. Towering 

buildings stood packed together, and streams of 

cars wove through the streets. 

I looked out at this vast expanse and suddenly felt 

completely weightless. 

The old Lauren had carried a man in her heart and 

lived like a shadow afraid of the light. 

The new Lauren sat at the top of Aegis Group, 

doing exactly what she wanted to do, out in the 

open for everyone to see. 

True strength was never about what you could destroy. It was about what you could rebuild. 

I poured Ethan a glass of water and pushed it 

across the desk. “Thank you.” 

“For what?” 

“For picking me up that day.” 

He took the glass but didn’t drink. “You said you still had something left. You pointed at me. I’ve never forgotten that.” 

His voice dropped. “It’s the same for me.” 

I looked back out the window. The sun was warm 

on my face. 

This ending was worth everything I went through.
