The Heir He Needed, the Wife He Betrayed Chapter 02
He had lied to me again.
My phone chimed.
A message from an unknown number came in.
Madison Wells: [Miss Vale, you already know the truth now.]
Madison Wells: [Can you give Cole back to us?]
Madison Wells: [A child needs his father. I’m begging you. Please let us be a family.]
Right after that, she sent a photo of a ring.
I instinctively touched my empty ring finger.
It was the engagement ring Cole had given me.
So I had accidentally dropped it at the door of the house in New York.
But that ring was not the only thing I had lost.
The hand holding my phone trembled uncontrollably.
When Cole saw the look on my face, he immediately tried to look at my phone.
“Babe, what’s wrong?”
“Did someone text you?”
I turned off the screen, lifted my eyes, and looked at the panic he had not managed to hide.
“No one texted me.”
“What you just said made me sick.”
I curled my lips into a mocking smile through my tears. “Loving me never stopped you from sleeping with someone else.”
Pain crossed Cole’s face as he pulled me tightly into his arms.
“I’m sorry, Evelyn.”
“I know I hurt you.”
“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I’ll treat you well for the rest of my life.”
He thought I was talking about what had happened three years ago.
I shoved him away and rushed into the bathroom.
Then I bent over the toilet and vomited until there was nothing left in my stomach.
Cole’s face went pale. “Evelyn, you’re thinking about that again.”
He grabbed at his own hair, looking as if he was on the verge of breaking down. “Can you forget it, please?”
“We already decided to start over.”
“Please don’t use that to hurt yourself and torture me anymore.”
He staggered to his feet and came over to grab my hand.
“Let’s both move forward, okay?”
I lowered my eyes quietly and looked at our joined hands.
After I chose to forgive him, my mind would drift every time we slept together.
His hands had touched that woman too.
His lips had kissed her too.
His body had known hers in the most intimate way too.
Every time I thought of that, I felt unbearably sick.
I despised his betrayal.
Even more than that, I despised myself for turning back.
I vomited again and again.
He would shove his fingers down his throat and force himself to throw up with me.
Each time, he left himself looking wrecked, his eyes red-rimmed and miserable.
Then he would kneel on the floor, hold my hand, and apologize over and over again.
“I’m sorry. It was all my fault.”
“Evelyn, forgive me.”
“Please stop thinking about it…”
Just like now, he looked so pitiful and so hateful.
I yanked my hand back. “Don’t touch me. You disgust me.”
At the same time, both Cole’s phone and mine chimed and buzzed.
Madison Wells: [Miss Vale, you’re infertile, and you’re not getting any younger. How much longer do you think you can keep clinging to the position of Mrs. Hawthorne?]
Madison Wells: [You might as well leave on your own. At least that way, you can still keep a little dignity.]
Madison Wells: [His heart has been with me for a long time. Do you need me to prove it?]
The next instant, Cole tightened his grip around his phone.
“Evelyn, something happened at the New York office.”
He did not dare look me in the eye. He turned away in a hurry and grabbed his coat.
“I have to get over there right now. You should get some rest.”
He no longer had the time to comfort me.
Because over there, Madison was pregnant again.
And that child was crying loudly.
“Mommy, don’t make my baby sister go away!”
“Daddy, hurry back!”
