The Eraser In My Brain Moved And My Sister Disappeared Chapter 06
When we got home, Dad carefully laid me on myÂ
little bed with the floral sheets.Â
His movements were very gentle, as if he wereÂ
afraid of hurting me.Â
He pulled the blanket up to my chest, then pausedÂ
and tugged it back down a little so my face wasÂ
showing.Â
“This way… you’ll have some air.”Â
Dad reached out to brush my bangs aside, but myÂ
hair was full of ice.Â
It had frozen hard.Â
No matter how he tried, he could not brush itÂ
aside.Â
“I’m sorry. I should have come looking for you.Â
yesterday. This is my fault.”Â
Dad’s hands kept shaking.Â
It was as if he had aged many years in an instant.Â
“Why didn’t I look for you last night? I knew youÂ
were sick. I knew.”Â
He kept hitting himself in the head, then buried hisÂ
face in his hands.Â
“Dad, don’t hit yourself. Please don’t.”Â
I wanted to stop him, but I could not.Â
I did not understand.Â
Why had Mom and Dad become like this?Â
Was it only because I was dead?Â
When the neighbors helped Mom into the house,Â
she saw me lying on the bed, and her whole bodyÂ
started trembling again.Â
She shook off the neighbor’s hand and stumbledÂ
to my bedside.Â
“It’s fake. All of this is fake.”Â
She murmured to herself, her eyes unfocused. “MyÂ
Sienna is playing a joke on me. She’s obviouslyÂ
hiding. Yes, she’s hiding.”Â
She suddenly turned around and began searchingÂ
every corner of the house like a madwoman.Â
“Sienna, come out. I won’t scold you anymore. I’llÂ
fix your doll. I’ll make your favorite honey barbecueÂ
ribs. Come out.”Â
Dad stepped forward to pull her back, but sheÂ
shoved him away.Â
“Don’t touch me. Someone must have hidden her.Â
My Sienna is such a good girl. She would never failÂ
to come home. Someone must have hurt her.”Â
Mom’s eyes were bloodshot as she grabbed Dad’sÂ
arm with a death grip.Â
“Call the police, Dave. Call them right now. SomeÂ
evil bastard must have taken my daughter andÂ
hurt her.”Â
“Gwen, calm down,” Dad tried to soothe her.Â
“Calm down? How am I supposed to calm down?Â
Isn’t the child lying there your daughter too?”Â
Mom screamed, and tears poured down her faceÂ
again.Â
“I’m calling the police. Right now.”Â
She broke free from Dad and stumbled toward theÂ
home phone, dialing with shaking hands.Â
Dad stood where he was and, in the end, did notÂ
stop her.Â
Sunny quietly walked to my bedside and stood onÂ
tiptoe to look at me.Â
She reached out with her small hand and carefullyÂ
touched the hand I had left outside the blanket,Â
then quickly pulled back and ran away.Â
A little while later, she came back holding the ragÂ
doll Mom had torn apart.Â
The doll’s body was split open, stuffing spilling. out, and one eye was missing.Â
Sunny placed the doll beside my pillow, then tried hard to tuck the loose stuffing back inside and pinch the ripped fabric together.Â
But the cloth had already been torn apart.Â
No matter how hard she tried, the stuffing kept leaking out.Â
Her eyes reddened with panic. Her little handsÂ
were bright red from the cold, but she stubbornlyÂ
kept trying again and again.Â
“When I fix the doll, Sienna won’t be madÂ
anymore.”Â
“Sunny won’t play hide–and–seek ever again.Â
Sienna, please get up.”
