The Daughter They Overlooked Was a Golden Wolf Chapter 02

The Daughter They Overlooked Was a Golden Wolf Chapter 02

My whole body goes rigid, and I grip the headphone cord tightly.

I’m about to speak when Xavier’s voice comes through again.

“Chloe, I don’t know if you’re listening to this show right now, but…”

“Forget it. She’s definitely not listening.”

Landon cuts him off, “Someone as proud as her wouldn’t listen to some sappy late–night pack

radio.”

The call ends.

Leaning back in my chair, I finally realize they don’t recognize me at all. They’re just sending their

message through the radio, thinking I’m somewhere out there listening.

For the past three years, I’ve been hosting the late–night show on the pack radio station, and I’ve

never told anyone.

In a suffocating family like mine, this is one of the few places that truly belongs to me.

I take off my headphones and shut down the equipment. The moment I push open the door of the

Pack Hall radio station, my phone buzzes.

It’s a message from Xavier.

[The college applications are finally over. We’re about to start a new chapter of our lives together.]

[Get some sleep.]

I stare at the screen and let out a cold laugh.

A new chapter?

For them, maybe. For me, it’s the beginning of a nightmare.

The next morning, I open my bedroom door.

Mom is sitting at the dining table, placing a huge piece of steak onto Megan’s plate.

“Megan, eat up. Application season is finally over. From now on, eat whatever you want!”

I pull out a chair and sit down. Mom immediately turns her attention to me.

“Chloe, you still applied to those top schools you told us about, right? With your grades, you should

be a shoo–in.”

Landon speaks up from beside her.

“Megan’s grades aren’t as good as yours. If she gets into a decent state school, we should be Brateful.”

“You’ll both be staying in–state. You need to look out for her.”

Megan suddenly leans toward me, smiling sweetly.

“Chloe, I know you’re smarter than me, but college admissions can be unpredictable.”

“What if you don’t get in?”

She covers her mouth with a little laugh, “I’m not wishing that on you. I’m just worried about you

Before I can respond, the doorbell rings.

It’s Xavier, the future Alpha of our pack, carrying several cups of coffee.

“Come on. I’m taking you girls shopping for some new clothes today.”

“My treat. Everything’s on me.”

Megan immediately jumps out of her chair and grabs Xavier’s hand, giving it an excited shake.

“Alpha Xavier, you’re the best!”

Half an hour later, Xavier and Landon are walking on either side of Megan at the shopping mall

downtown.

I trail three steps behind them, like an unwanted outsider.

Inside a women’s clothing store, I spot a white dress I like. I reach for it, but a hand suddenly shoots

out from beside me and snatches it away.

Megan holds the dress against herself and turns to Xavier.

“Alpha, does this look good on me?”

A flash of admiration crosses Xavier’s eyes, and he nods repeatedly.

“Yeah. It really brings out your green eyes.”

Megan turns to me with a pitiful expression, “But there’s only one left…”

Landon speaks impatiently from the side.

“Chloe, you barely dress up anyway. Just let Megan have it.”

Xavier steps forward and immediately pulls out his credit card, handing it to the sales associate.

“Chloe, go pick something else. I’ll buy it for you.”

For the next two hours, every time I show interest in something, Megan suddenly wants it too..

By the end of the day, I haven’t bought a single thing, while Megan’s shopping bags completely fill

the trunk of the car.

She sticks out her tongue at me.

“Chloe, there’s no room left. Can you just get an Uber home?”

Xavier gives me an apologetic look, “I’ll drop Megan off first, then come back for you, okay?”

I answer coldly, “No need.”

Before I can say anything else, Xavier steps on the gas and drives away, leaving me standing alone

on the side of the road.

Suddenly, a familiar voice comes from behind me.

“Chloe?”

I turn around.

It’s Logan Blackwell, the Gamma of a neighboring pack.

He goes to the same school as I do, but he’s on the warrior track.

Last year, we competed together in the werewolf warrior championships and won an award. He’s

also one of the top warriors in our high school.

“Why are you here alone?”

His eyes drop to the empty shopping bag in my hand, “Shopping for college? By the way, which school did you end up applying to?”

I force a bitter smile, “I might… not be going to college.”

Logan freezes, his brows immediately drawing together.

“What? How?”

“You’re one of the top STEM students in our school. With your grades, there’s no way you’d have trouble getting in. Not with your SAT and AP scores.‘

I shake my head and say nothing.

Logan studies me for a few seconds. Then, as if something suddenly occurs to him, he straightens.

“Wait. You said you might not be going to college?”

I stare at him in confusion.

Logan takes a step closer, his expression suddenly serious.

“Do you remember last year’s werewolf warrior championships?”

“After the finals, a Royal Fang professor reached out to me personally.”

“He told me Royal Fang was willing to reserve a special admission spot for the winner of that year’s

competition.”

“The winner…”

He looks directly at me, “That was you.”

I freeze.

“But everyone at school knew you were planning to apply to in–state schools with Alpha Xavier for STEM programs. You were always focused on Physics and Engineering, so I turned him down for

you.”

He steps closer, his expression earnest.

“But if there’s still time…”

“Do you want me to contact that professor again?”
