She Mocked My “Useless” Husband Then My Family Ended the Party Chapter 06
“Who are we?”Â
The woman on the far left adjusted her glasses.Â
Sharply tailored suit. A thick stack of documents tucked under one arm.Â
Victoria. Julian’s sister. The attorney who’d neverÂ
lost.Â
She walked up to Chloe and threw the stack straight into her face.Â
“I’m Victoria Sterling. They’re the Hayes family. And I’m the attorney who’s going to bury you.”Â
“The Sterling family? The… the Hayes family?”Â
Her knees buckled. She hit the floor.Â
The Sterling family and the Hayes family ofÂ
Highcrest.Â
Two families that owned everything, legal and otherwise. Money, law, medicine, and the kind ofÂ
power that never had to explain itself.Â
She’d thought Clara was bluffing.Â
I hadn’t even believed they’d make it in time. But allÂ
four of them were here. Standing in this room. ForÂ
- me.Â
“Impossible… this is impossible…”Â
Chloe was shaking her head, muttering.Â
“She’s the one who went after my husband! SheÂ
started this!”Â
“I don’t care if you’re the Hayes family. You can’tÂ
just do this!”Â
SMACK!Â
Victoria backhanded her so hard Chloe wentÂ
sprawling.Â
“You want to talk about what’s fair?”Â
Victoria stood over her, disgust carved into everyÂ
line of her face.Â
“First, my sister–in–law has the entire Sterling and Hayes fortune behind her. She could buy your family ten times over and still have change.”Â
“Why would she waste her time on someÂ
gold–digging parasite who married into money?”Â
“Second, unlawful detention, aggravated assault, and confiscating life–saving medical equipmentÂ
from a man in cardiac distress.”Â
She nodded at the documents on the floor.Â
“Every page on that floor is a charge. You’ll growÂ
old in a cell.”Â
“Third…”Â
Victoria turned to Felix, who hadn’t stoppedÂ
shaking.Â
“Mr. Mercer. I’ll ask you once. Have you everÂ
spoken a single word to my sister–in–law?“Felix’sÂ
whole body shuddered.Â
Red laser dots danced across the bodyguards‘Â
chests. Chloe was on the floor, broken. There wasÂ
no one left to hide behind.Â
He knew it was over.Â
He dropped to his knees.Â
“No! No!”Â
Felix dropped to his hands and knees, hisÂ
forehead nearly touching the floor, sweat soakingÂ
through his shirt.Â
“I lied! She doesn’t know me. She’s never met me!”Â
“Chloe was already convinced she was the otherÂ
woman, and I… I was scared Chloe would find outÂ
the truth, so I just… went along with it. I let herÂ
take the fall.”Â
Chloe’s head snapped up.Â
“Felix! You lying, cheating bastard. What did youÂ
just say?”Â
“You used me?”Â
“Who’s the real homewrecker here?”Â
Victoria pulled a photo from the folder and dropped it at Chloe’s feet.Â
“Your father’s other daughter. Your half–sister,Â
Mia.”Â
“Her mother took your father. Now she has yourÂ
husband too. And you’re too stupid to see theÂ
pattern.”Â
“You put your hands on a member of my familyÂ
over a blurry photo shot from behind.”Â
“Chloe, you’re not just stupid. You’re blind.”Â
Chloe stared at the photo. A clear shot, full face.Â
The woman was wearing the same haute coutureÂ
gown, and she was wrapped around Felix, faceÂ
pressed into his neck.Â
There it was.Â
Every accusation, every slap, every smug word outÂ
of her mouth, all of it built on a lie.Â
She had destroyed her own family for a man who’dÂ
been playing her the entire time.Â
Chloe let out a scream that shattered what wasÂ
left of her composure. She launched herself atÂ
Felix, hands closing around his throat.Â
“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you, you lying piece of…”Â
They went down together, clawing and thrashingÂ
on the marble.Â
Arthur watched like none of it interested him.Â
He crossed the room to me, crouched down, andÂ
brushed the hair from my face.Â
“Clara. You okay?”Â
Those eyes, the ones that terrified everyone else,Â
went soft the second they landed on me.Â
I shook my head. My eyes never left Julian.Â
“Arthur, I’m fine.”Â
“Julian… is he…”Â
Eleanor sat back on her heels and exhaled.Â
“We’ve got a heartbeat.”Â
“He’s stable for now. But I need him back at ourÂ
hospital in Highcrest tonight. Full workup, noÂ
cutting corners.”Â
The breath I’d been holding for the last hour finally left my body.Â
I collapsed where I sat, gulping air, crying so hard IÂ
couldn’t see.Â
Julian slowly opened his eyes.Â
His gaze was unfocused, drifting, until it foundÂ
- me.Â
He lifted one hand, slow and trembling, and hisÂ
voice barely made it above a whisper.Â
“Clara… don’t cry…”Â
He had no idea how close he’d just come to dying.Â
All he knew was that I was crying, and that wasn’tÂ
okay.Â
I grabbed his hand and held on like I’d never let go.Â
“I won’t cry. Julian, we’re going home.”Â
Arthur straightened up. Chloe and Felix were stillÂ
tangled on the floor.Â
“Take them away.”Â
“Bayport won’t be needing the Thornes anymore.”
